{"id":2213,"date":"2012-04-03T10:56:27","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T10:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=2213"},"modified":"2013-09-13T18:56:40","modified_gmt":"2013-09-13T18:56:40","slug":"the-beast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2012\/04\/03\/the-beast\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-scanner-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2215\" title=\"The Beast\" alt=\"BookDrive Pro Scanner\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2012\/04\/beast1-1024x1024.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-scanner-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2217\" title=\"Beast\" alt=\"BookDrive Pro Scanner\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2012\/04\/beast3-1024x1024.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We like to occasionally highlight tools used in the archive (see our <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/2010\/06\/22\/name-those-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous homage to tools<\/a>) and have decided that we would dedicate a post to a piece of equipment that we fondly refer to as &#8220;<strong>The Beast<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 <strong>The Beast <\/strong>(aka the BookDrive Pro Scanner) perches on one of our processing tables like a giant vampire bat (see images above) and does its best to collect a heavy coating of dust.\u00a0 <strong>The Beast<\/strong> came with minimal instructions and a pretty hefty learning curve.\u00a0 In a nutshell, two heavy duty professional cameras are responsible for capturing images of text (from books, newspapers, etc.) or photographs that are either too large or too fragile for our flatbed scanner, but they must be positioned at precisely the correct angle and height-not an easy feat.<\/p>\n<p>Soooo, <strong>the Beast<\/strong> sat unused for some time.\u00a0 In the last couple of weeks however, <strong>Steve<\/strong> has bravely snow shoveled off the dust and rolled up his sleeves in an attempt to tame <strong>the Beast<\/strong>.\u00a0 <em>(A hearty shout-out is also in order for one of our IT staff, <strong>Stephen Leather<\/strong>, who has spent a<strong> LOT<\/strong> of time learning how to use the scanner &amp; trying to impart this knowledge to us.<\/em>\u00a0 <em>Thanks for your patience Stephen!<\/em>)\u00a0 Long, long, long story short-<strong>the Beast<\/strong> has been tamed.\u00a0 It now sits quietly, awaiting our next two big &#8216;ole digitization projects:\u00a0 the entire run of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utc.edu\/archives\/rg027\/sg02\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">University Echo student newspaper<\/a> (1906-present) and all of the university&#8217;s published <strong>yearbooks<\/strong>!\u00a0 These projects will take quite a bit of time (at least a year) to complete, but the digitized collections will be extremely valuable to many of our patrons.\u00a0 Thanks, <strong>Beast<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to stop in and meet<strong> the Beast<\/strong> at any time. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We like to occasionally highlight tools used in the archive (see our previous homage to tools) and have decided that we would dedicate a post to a piece of equipment that we fondly refer to as &#8220;The Beast&#8220;.\u00a0 The Beast (aka the BookDrive Pro Scanner) perches on one of our processing tables like a giant&hellip; <\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-wrap\"><span><a class=\"more-link button text\" href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2012\/04\/03\/the-beast\/\"><span>Continue Reading <\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":414,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4922],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-2213","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-special-collections","7":"entry"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
