Like a little old-time folk music with your scholarly discourse?\u00a0 Lupton Library, along with the English Department of UTC, is sponsoring the Emma Bell Miles Symposium on Southern Appalachian Culture & Nature<\/a> on Sept. 9-10.\u00a0 Emma Bell Miles (1879-1919) was a Walden\u2019s Ridge artist, writer, naturalist and poet.\u00a0 This two day symposium will feature speakers and performers presenting a variety of material related to Miles and the region.\u00a0 Musical performances, tours of sites related to Miles (both in Chattanooga and her residences on Walden\u2019s Ridge), poetry, art, and storytelling round out the symposium.\u00a0\u00a0 The symposium will feature two key note addresses.\u00a0 The first is by Dr. Grace Toney Edwards<\/a>, professor emeritus of Appalachian Studies and English at Radford University, and current Research Faculty Associate of the Appalachian Regional Studies Center at Radford University.\u00a0 The second key note address is by Dr. Elizabeth Engelhardt<\/a>, from the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas.\u00a0 This is the second symposium in what is to be an annual event.<\/p>\n

The symposium activities are free and the public is invited.\u00a0 Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend & support this new event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
