{"id":2357,"date":"2012-06-14T12:05:17","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T16:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2013-09-25T15:39:02","modified_gmt":"2013-09-25T19:39:02","slug":"new-digital-exhibit-the-berlin-olympics-1936","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2012\/06\/14\/new-digital-exhibit-the-berlin-olympics-1936\/","title":{"rendered":"New Digital Exhibit: The Berlin Olympics of 1936"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m sure everyone is as stoked about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/london-2012-summer-olympics\" target=\"_blank\">London Olympics<\/a> as I am.\u00a0 With sports like table tennis, judo, and badminton, what&#8217;s not to love?\u00a0 But the Olympics has seen some dark times and one of the darkest was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/berlin-1936-summer-olympics\" target=\"_blank\">Berlin Olympics of 1936<\/a>.\u00a0 Berlin had been awarded the games in 1930, before Adolph Hitler&#8217;s rise, and many countries called for a boycott after the dictator came to power. \u00a0 While Hitler hoped to make the Summer Olympics a showcase for his Nazi regime and his Aryan (Master) Race, African-American athletes such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesseowens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jesse Owens<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archie_Williams\" target=\"_blank\">Archie Williams<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Woodruff\" target=\"_blank\">John Woodruff<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornelius_Johnson_%28athlete%29\" target=\"_blank\">Cornelius Johnson<\/a> defeated Germany\u2019s athletes, proving to the world that Germany\u2019s athletes were certainly not the best in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Collections holds a copy of a German-produced 1936 Summer Olympics collectible book and accompanying sports cards.
