{"id":2503,"date":"2012-08-17T11:59:00","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T15:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=2503"},"modified":"2013-09-25T15:38:40","modified_gmt":"2013-09-25T19:38:40","slug":"come-on-in-we-dont-bite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2012\/08\/17\/come-on-in-we-dont-bite\/","title":{"rendered":"Come On In, We Don&#8217;t Bite!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Welcome back UTC!!<\/strong>\u00a0 The campus is already bustling and Monday will be semi-organized chaos (which is just how we like it).\u00a0 Yesterday was freshman move-in day and represents the kick-off to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2012\/08\/schedule-for-welcome-week-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\">Welcome Week<\/a> for our new and returning students.\u00a0 The Special Collections department would like to extend its own welcome to all students, faculty, and staff-new &amp; returning.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday a freshman came in to check out our summer exhibit, <em>The Berlin Olympics of 1936<\/em> (also available <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.utc.edu\/cdm\/landingpage\/collection\/p16053coll1\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>), and learn about the other materials that we hold and the research possibilities they might hold for him (as a History major).\u00a0\u00a0 While we have plenty of interest for History majors, we have very diverse collections that speak to a wide array of disciplines (Anthropology, Biology\/Environmental Science, Law, Art, Interior Design, Religion, English, Psychology, Education, etc.).\u00a0 We would love to give <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>YOU<\/strong><\/span> a tour of the Special Collections or talk to you about integrating primary sources into your curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>To give you a sneak peek at the diversity in the Special Collections, and the interesting materials that find their way here, we just received a collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collodion_process\" target=\"_blank\">gelatin glass plate negatives<\/a> created in the late 1800s\/early 1900s by a Massachusetts artist and teacher.\u00a0 The negatives are of an enormous number of plants, both domestic &amp; exotic, and come with individual, hand-colored photographs made from each negative.\u00a0 As far as we can determine, the artist sold and gave away individual, hand-colored photographs made from the negatives.\u00a0 He also created a book from some of the negatives and Harvard University is the only facility that owns a copy (again, as far as we can determine).<\/p>\n<p>A sampling of the hand-colored photographs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-plant-sample.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2504\" style=\"border: 2px solid black\" title=\"Plant Sample\" alt=\"Plant Sample\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2012\/08\/PlantSample-1024x755.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back UTC!!\u00a0 The campus is already bustling and Monday will be semi-organized chaos (which is just how we like it).\u00a0 Yesterday was freshman move-in day and represents the kick-off to Welcome Week for our new and returning students.\u00a0 The Special Collections department would like to extend its own welcome to all students, faculty, and&hellip; <\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-wrap\"><span><a class=\"more-link button text\" href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2012\/08\/17\/come-on-in-we-dont-bite\/\"><span>Continue Reading <\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":414,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4922],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-2503","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-special-collections","7":"entry"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Come On In, We Don&#039;t Bite!
