{"id":2626,"date":"2012-11-27T11:54:45","date_gmt":"2012-11-27T16:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=2626"},"modified":"2013-09-25T15:38:10","modified_gmt":"2013-09-25T19:38:10","slug":"new-additions-to-old-collections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2012\/11\/27\/new-additions-to-old-collections\/","title":{"rendered":"New Additions to Old Collections"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2632\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collections-snakes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2632 \" title=\"Snakes\" alt=\"Snakes\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2012\/11\/Snakes1-1024x688.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lydia Hollins and her uncle, Dewey Chafin, handle serpents in church.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While many collections come to a repository in one deposit, others tend to trickle in bit by bit.\u00a0 Still others seem complete until a donor pops up with a few more things to add to his\/her collection.\u00a0 Just this month, we have had very interesting collection additions from two different donors.<\/p>\n<p>One of our most heavily used collections is the <a href=\"http:\/\/findingaids.library.utc.edu\/Hood.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hood-Williamson Archives on the Serpent Handlers of Southern Appalachia<\/a>.\u00a0 The collection consists of 184 DVDs with over 400 hours of footage documenting the contemporary serpent handlers of Southern Appalachia, with extensive footage of entire services and interviews with church members of the major Jesus Name serpent handling churches of Appalachia from 1975-2004.\u00a0 We have held these materials for the last 12 years, thinking the collection to be complete.\u00a0 However, during a recent visit with Dr. Hood I discovered a large collection of photographs taken during Drs. Hood and Williamson&#8217;s research.\u00a0 I simply inquired about the future of the images and indicated we would love to add them to the collection and voila&#8211;<strong>2,500 photographs acquired!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second collection to receive new materials is the <a href=\"http:\/\/findingaids.library.utc.edu\/Davis.html\" target=\"_blank\">Robert S. Davis Papers<\/a> which, until the addition, was comprised of research material and correspondence on Hamilton County outlaw, Joseph Ritchey (1840 \u2013 1876).\u00a0 Earlier this month Prof. Davis donated research materials relating to another scholarly paper that he produced.\u00a0 The newly donated material includes information on self-proclaimed Indian-fighter, war veteran, author, and accused murderer Harrison E. Lewis.\u00a0 Col. Lewis, who reportedly fought under Gen.
