{"id":320,"date":"2009-09-03T12:44:37","date_gmt":"2009-09-03T16:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/news\/?p=320"},"modified":"2018-05-31T16:22:49","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T20:22:49","slug":"the-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2009\/09\/03\/the-news\/","title":{"rendered":"The News You&#8217;ve All Been Waiting For"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ll have a <strong>Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino<\/strong>, a media lab, a couple of practice presentation rooms, and a few dozen group study rooms to go, please.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and make it 5 stories.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, so right now we\u2019re just dreaming, but it\u2019s a dream with reality in sight.\u00a0\u00a0 For the past 2 years, a group of <strong>UTC faculty, students, and community members<\/strong> have<strong> <\/strong>dreamed, discussed, wrangled, and hammered out a <a href=\"https:\/\/wikilib.utc.edu\/index.php\/New_Library_Program_Statement_Committee_(university-wide_group)\">\u201cprogram statement\u201d<\/a> \u2013 the full description of the proposed new University Library and Information Center.\u00a0 The architectural firms of Derthick, Henley &amp; Wilkerson\/Artech is in the process of getting final approvals for plans before starting the bidding and contract award process.\u00a0 Look for construction equipment to start appearing next spring.\u00a0 July 2010 is the target for beginning construction and we hope to move in by <strong>Spring 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>new UTC Library<\/strong> will be at the corner of Vine and Douglas, next to Chamberlain Field.\u00a0 Plans are for Chamberlain Field itself to become a beautiful landscaped greenspace.\u00a0 The new L-shaped Library will wrap around this greenspace and enjoy lovely views on that side.\u00a0 There will be a main entrance in the corner, along with a separate entrance for the large Starbucks coffee shop and cafe.\u00a0 A veranda outside the Starbucks will give us space to sit and enjoy that cup of Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino.<\/p>\n<p>The State\u2019s budget shortfall nearly put the kibosh on the new Library this summer.\u00a0 Thanks to the hard work of some of our forward-thinking legislators on the budget committee and Governor Bredesen funding was preserved and the Library project allowed to move forward.\u00a0 We appreciate everyone who wrote to their State legislators in support of the Library.\u00a0 The current Lupton Library opened in 1974 for a campus of 4,574 enrolled students.\u00a0 Our student population is now nearly 10,000!\u00a0 In 1974, the Library owned 170,000 books; today we have <strong>1.7 MILLION items<\/strong>.\u00a0 In 1974, personal computers didn\u2019t even exist, and the current building isn\u2019t designed to support the computers and other devices that are now so important to research and scholarship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student services and technology<\/strong> are front and center in the new UTC Library.\u00a0 The entire building is designed with the robust infrastructure needed to support today\u2019s and tomorrow\u2019s technology devices.\u00a0 Students, staff and faculty can bring their own laptops or use one of the Library\u2019s 400+ desktops and notebooks.\u00a0 The digital creation and conversion center will give students a lab where they can create and edit videos or convert analog media to digital, with help from specially trained staff.\u00a0 The learning and information commons will provide more than just computers and printing; Reference Librarians and Technology Specialists will be there, ready to assist, teach and troubleshoot problems with students.<\/p>\n<p>The new <strong>LEED certified<\/strong> Library will be the first green building on campus.\u00a0 (LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.)\u00a0 It will encompass 180,000 square feet\u00a0 and have loads of windows to take maximum advantage of natural light (with the added bonus of some beautiful views of campus and Lookout Mountain.)\u00a0 Each floor will have its own character and purpose.\u00a0 Here are some of the highlights:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>1st floor<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nMost of the books will be on this floor, using compact, moveable shelving.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>2nd floor<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nStarbucks Coffee Shop and Cafe<br \/>\nStudy space open 24\/5 (Sunday through Thursday)<br \/>\nDigital creation and conversion center<br \/>\nNew books browsing area<br \/>\nMovies and music<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>3rd floor<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nReference\/help desk and learning and information commons with 150 seats<br \/>\nSpecial practice presentation rooms where students can record and review their performances<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>4th floor<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nMost of the 40+ group study rooms will be on this floor.<br \/>\nGraduate student lounge with computers<br \/>\nAcademic Student Support Center (tutoring, writing center, advising, etc.)<br \/>\nQuiet study lounge<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>5th floor<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nGrand Reading area<br \/>\nUniversity Archives and Special Collections<br \/>\nFaculty lounge with computers<br \/>\nWalker Teaching Resource Center<br \/>\nFaculty and graduate student carrels<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Auditorium<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIndependent to new building;
