A book donated by the University of Chattanooga Class of 1941<\/strong> to the University was discovered by a Georgia book dealer, who has kindly returned the gift to the Lupton Library.\u00a0\u00a0 Let Us Now Praise Famous Men<\/em>, by James Agee and Walker Evans, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, may not be a rare or valuable book, but it holds historic significance for the University.\u00a0 A book plate reads:\u00a0 \u201cPresented to University of Chattanooga Library by the Class of 1941.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamlin J. Endicott, of Sawgrass Books and Music, Decatur, Georgia, \u201cpicked it up with other books, and seeing what it was, decided to \u2018send it back\u00a0 home,\u2019\u201d according to Steve Cox, Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist at the Lupton Library.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom looking at the book, it appears to have left the library, either never returned from being checked out, or was stolen before the merger, since the stamp inside reads \u201cUniversity of Chattanooga\u201d not UTC.\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe the library staff would have knowingly discarded it.\u00a0 This gift from the 1941 graduating class has finally been returned, and is now housed in the Special Collections of the library,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n

Cox said it appears the class of 1941 gifted the University by outfitting a \u201cseminar room\u201d in the library, located in Fletcher Hall at the time.\u00a0 \u201cThis book apparently came with this project,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
