I had hoped to post about some wonderful and relevant item that the Special Collections possesses in relation to this historically-rich patriotic holiday.\u00a0 Alas.\u00a0 In scouring the finding aids for potential materials, however, I ran across an entry for &#8220;<strong>Air Force One<\/strong>&#8221; cigarettes. What? That&#8217;s right- we retain a collection of Air Force One cigarettes (within a larger collection), complete with the presidential seal. These cigarettes (menthol &amp; regular filtered) were made available to those who rode in Air Force One (or Army One). Notably stored alongside these cigarettes in the collection are a <strong>JFK cigar<\/strong> (unsmoked) and an <strong>Estes Kefauver and Adlai Stevenson<\/strong> campaign lighter. While being pretty irrelevant to the approaching holiday, these items do offer us a little snapshot of accepted political practices and marketing strategies in the 1950&#8217;s and 1960&#8217;s (ours are from the 60&#8217;s, but apparently cigarettes were offered aboard AFO until 1988!).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-fourth-of-july-2010-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-456\" title=\"AFO Cigs\" alt=\"AFO Cigs\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/07\/AFO-Cigs3.JPG\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-fourth-of-july-2010-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-460\" title=\"Estes &amp; Adlai Lighter\" alt=\"Estes &amp; Adlai Lighter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/07\/Estes-Adlai-Lighter.JPG\" width=\"518\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Happy Fourth of July! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fourth of July: an easy enough topic on which to compose a post.
