{"id":6399,"date":"2010-04-08T13:51:04","date_gmt":"2010-04-08T13:51:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=187"},"modified":"2013-09-16T13:41:39","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T13:41:39","slug":"robert-burns-scotlands-favorite-son-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2010\/04\/08\/robert-burns-scotlands-favorite-son-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Burns: Scotland&#8217;s Favorite Son"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-robert-burns-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-186\" title=\"Robert Burns\" alt=\"Robert Burns\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/04\/Burns1-190x300.jpg\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-robert-burns-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-212\" title=\"Robert Burns\" alt=\"Robert Burns\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/04\/Burns2-198x300.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In celebration of National Poetry Month<\/strong>, we are highlighting a collection of books that we have by Scottish poet &amp; lyricist Robert Burns.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Burns (1759-1796) was considered &#8220;Scotland&#8217;s Favorite Son&#8221; and is still celebrated today for the contributions that he made to Scottish folk tales &amp; songs.\u00a0 He was renowned worldwide for his poetry &amp; songs and was considered a pioneer of the Romantic poetry movement (which included William Wordsworth &amp; John Keats).\u00a0 To Americans, Burns poem (&amp; song) Auld Lang Syne is likely his most recognizable work and has become a staple in our New Year&#8217;s celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Burns&#8217; influence lived on long past the great bard.\u00a0 He influenced American culture through prominent icons and their work.\u00a0 For example, the title for <strong>John Steinbeck&#8217;s <em>Of Mice and Men<\/em><\/strong> came from a notable Burns poem entitled, <em>To a Mouse<\/em>.\u00a0 The translated stanza reads:<\/p>\n<p><em>But little Mouse, you are not alone,<br \/>\nIn proving foresight may be vain:<br \/>\nThe best laid schemes of mice and men<br \/>\nGo often askew,<br \/>\nAnd leave us nothing but grief and pain,<br \/>\nFor promised joy!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another example: when asked what lyric or verse exerted the most profound effect on his life, the great <strong>Bob Dylan<\/strong> chose Burns 1794 song <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Red,_Red_Rose\">A Red, Red Rose<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Collections department has a collection of Burns materials including rare books, pamphlets, clippings, and literary journals that were given to us by the Decosimo family of Chattanooga.\u00a0 The materials were collected by their ancestor, Colonel Robert B. Cooke (1865-1942), a prominent lawyer in Chattanooga and founder of the Chattanooga chapter of the Robert Burns Society.\u00a0 While these items cannot be checked out, we encourage you to view them in the Special Collections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In celebration of National Poetry Month, we are highlighting a collection of books that we have by Scottish poet &amp; lyricist Robert Burns.
