Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong> <\/strong>&#8211;Margaret Mead<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-earth-day-2010-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-259\" title=\"Earth Day Yearbook\" alt=\"Earth Day Yearbook\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/04\/EarthDayYearbook1-217x300.jpg\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-earth-day-2010-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-258\" title=\"Earth Day Yearbook\" alt=\"Earth Day Yearbook\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/04\/EarthDayYearbook2-223x300.jpg\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(<strong>click to enlarge<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>Forty years ago today, the modern environmental movement was born.\u00a0 Wisconsin Senator <strong>Gaylord Nelson<\/strong>, outraged from the lack of concern Washington showed at an enormously devastating oil spill off the coast of California the previous year, took action.\u00a0 He devised a national event: a &#8220;teach-in&#8221; hosted on college campuses to educate the public, raise awareness, and force politicians to act on issues concerning the environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UTC answered this call to action.<\/strong> They began the day on April 22, 1970 by picking up a mountain of trash from alongside Chattanooga&#8217;s famed W Road.\u00a0 The students then returned to campus to stage their own &#8220;teach-in&#8221;.\u00a0 Above are two images from UTC&#8217;s 1970 yearbook featuring those students taking their stand for the environment.\u00a0 They were primarily protesting the air quality in Chattanooga.\u00a0 [In 1969, Chattanooga was named &#8220;the most polluted city in the U.S.&#8221; by the U.S. Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare.]\u00a0 These students helped to raise awareness of a serious environmental issue that has been corrected- kudos to them!<\/p>\n<p>Feet firmly planted on my soapbox, I must add:\u00a0 It is easy to become complacent as we hear about the irreversible devastation of our environment and think there is little we can do.\u00a0 The phrase &#8220;going green&#8221; is dropped so frequently now it has become little more than background static.\u00a0 UTC&#8217;s enrollment was around 3,500 when those first students answered that call to action.\u00a0 In 2010 our student body surpasses the 10,000 mark.\u00a0 When the pond gets bigger, it&#8217;s easier to believe that someone else will act.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t wait for someone else- <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>YOU<\/strong><\/span> matter &amp; can make a difference.\u00a0 Follow this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthday.org\/\">link<\/a> to the official Earth Day website for details and how you can get involved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.
