{"id":708,"date":"2010-09-09T08:05:46","date_gmt":"2010-09-09T08:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=708"},"modified":"2013-09-16T14:00:33","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T14:00:33","slug":"tennessee-stud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2010\/09\/09\/tennessee-stud\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee Stud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-tennessee-stud.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-706\" title=\"Broadside for horse stud services\" alt=\"Broadside for horse stud services\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/09\/Boston-721x1024.jpg\" width=\"416\" height=\"590\" \/><\/a><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>click on image to enlarge<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t really happen upon anything of interest in the collection this week, so I went digging.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have to dig far to find this chestnut.<\/p>\n<p>We have a set of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broadside_%28printing%29\">broadsides<\/a> from the mid-1800&#8217;s that are representative of the printing press style for that time.\u00a0 (This style is experiencing a comeback in modern printmaking: see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yeehawindustries.com\/home.html\">Yee-Haw Industries<\/a>, a Knoxville-based printing press.)\u00a0 Ephemeral posters of this sort did not survive in large numbers and are considered rare.\u00a0 The one pictured above is an advertisement for the stud services of a horse named &#8220;<strong>Boston<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 The broadside comes from our Joseph Johnston collection.\u00a0 Johnston was a shop-owner in Madisonville, Tennessee and likely had this poster displayed in his shop window (the James Johnston referred to in the advertisement might be a relation of Mr. Johnston, but we do not know for sure).\u00a0 We have several other rare broadsides in the collection which can be viewed at any time in the Special Collections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>click on image to enlarge I didn&#8217;t really happen upon anything of interest in the collection this week, so I went digging.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have to dig far to find this chestnut.
