{"id":719,"date":"2010-09-17T07:26:13","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T07:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/?p=719"},"modified":"2013-09-16T14:00:12","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T14:00:12","slug":"we-the-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2010\/09\/17\/we-the-people\/","title":{"rendered":"We the People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/09\/special-collection-we-the-people.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-721   alignleft\" title=\"First Page of the Constitution\" alt=\"First Page of the Constitution\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lib.utc.edu\/archivist\/files\/2010\/09\/Constitution_Pg1of4_AC-845x1024.jpg\" width=\"426\" height=\"516\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Image from the National Archive<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I, of all people, do not presume to give anyone a history lesson.\u00a0 However, it was brought to my attention that today (September 17) is &#8220;<strong>Constitution Day<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 &#8220;Yay for the Constitution&#8221;, I thought.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s one of the (if not THE) seminal documents in our country&#8217;s history and is still going strong today.\u00a0 Good for us!&#8221;\u00a0 I continued to think about this and add up what I knew (off the top of my head) about the Constitution.\u00a0 I will not embarrass myself by sharing that list.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of excellent websites you can visit for detailed, pertinent information: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constitutioncenter.org\/ncc_progs_Constitution_Day.aspx\">The Constitution Center<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/charters\/charters.html\">National Archive<\/a>.\u00a0 Alternatively, you might just want to know the basics.\u00a0 In brief: The Constitution, composed and signed in 1787, is the &#8220;supreme law&#8221; of our country.\u00a0 It forms the framework of our democratic government (federal, state, judicial) and delineates how the government will interact with people (citizens &amp; non-citizens) within the U.S.\u00a0 The rights that we are most familiar with are represented in the amendments to the Constitution (the first 10 of which are called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/charters\/bill_of_rights.html\">Bill of Rights<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, this post is not about documents that our Special Collections department holds (we only wish!).\u00a0 We do, however, have a book entitled <em>The Constitutions of the United States, According to the Latest Amendments<\/em> that was published in Philadelphia in 1802 and contains the US Constitution as well as all of the then-existing states\u2019 constitutions.\u00a0 Not a light read, I can assure you, but an interesting book nonetheless!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image from the National Archive I, of all people, do not presume to give anyone a history lesson.\u00a0 However, it was brought to my attention that today (September 17) is &#8220;Constitution Day&#8220;.\u00a0 &#8220;Yay for the Constitution&#8221;, I thought.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s one of the (if not THE) seminal documents in our country&#8217;s history and is still going&hellip; <\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-wrap\"><span><a class=\"more-link button text\" href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/library\/2010\/09\/17\/we-the-people\/\"><span>Continue Reading <\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":414,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4922],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-719","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-special-collections","7":"entry"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
