She knew the student&nbsp;wanted to pursue a career&nbsp;within the TV news&nbsp;production field.&nbsp; But there was one thing&nbsp;she didn\u2019t know. Yet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re&nbsp;meeting on&nbsp;Zoom and we\u2019re talking, and then&nbsp;my prospective student said he&nbsp;was one of three.&nbsp;And I immediately thought, \u2018What are you talking about?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;McGhee&nbsp;recalls. \u201cI thought I heard wrong, so&nbsp;I&nbsp;asked him,&nbsp;\u2018You have a twin?\u2019 And he says, \u2018No, I have two twins.\u2019&nbsp;I said,&nbsp;\u2018I don\u2019t believe&nbsp;you.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen&nbsp;one&nbsp;of his brothers&nbsp;comes into the picture, and&nbsp;I\u2019m like,&nbsp;\u2018Oh, wow.\u2019&nbsp;And then the third&nbsp;brother&nbsp;comes&nbsp;into the picture. It was&nbsp;the funniest thing. I&nbsp;had to take&nbsp;a picture of my&nbsp;screen.\u201d&nbsp;McGhee admits she&nbsp;still&nbsp;can&nbsp;get&nbsp;mixed up by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Figgures&nbsp;triplets, who&nbsp;arrived at&nbsp;UTC&nbsp;last fall.&nbsp;\u201cBut when you\u2019re talking to one, you\u2019re&nbsp;really addressing&nbsp;all of them,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"similar-but-different\" class=\"cnvs-block-section-heading cnvs-block-section-heading-1615919698713 halignleft\" >\n\t<span class=\"cnvs-section-title\">\n\t\t<span>Similar, but different<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So&nbsp;who are&nbsp;Caleb, Chauncey and Chris&nbsp;Figgures?&nbsp;Grade level has them as&nbsp;third-year students. They&nbsp;are the first known triplets to attend UTC&nbsp;at the same time.&nbsp;They live at home&nbsp;with their parents.&nbsp;And, while&nbsp;majoring in communications, they&nbsp;take some classes together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caleb is the youngest by&nbsp;one&nbsp;minute. Chris is the most laid-back. Chauncey is the most passionate&nbsp;about&nbsp;writing.&nbsp;For Black History Month in February, he wrote a daily&nbsp;Facebook blog&nbsp;celebrating&nbsp;African-American&nbsp;trailblazers.&nbsp;All&nbsp;three&nbsp;brothers&nbsp;are&nbsp;into&nbsp;social media. As a trio, they can be found on&nbsp;Instagram,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCIpnn3l2yxunGnevPzWrP6w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTub<\/a>e&nbsp;and&nbsp;TikTok&nbsp;where&nbsp;one of their bits&nbsp;went&nbsp;viral last October.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;Figgures\u2019 were the first African American triplets to be born at Hutcheson Medical Center (now CHI Memorial Hospital-Georgia) in Fort Oglethorpe,&nbsp;and the first&nbsp;African&nbsp;American&nbsp;triplets to graduate from Ridgeland High School in Rossville, Georgia.&nbsp;\u201cCaleb is&nbsp;the tallest,\u201d says Chris, although you can\u2019t tell&nbsp;with all three&nbsp;sitting&nbsp;down.&nbsp;\u201cAnd I\u2019ve got a slimmer face. A&nbsp;lot of people get&nbsp;me&nbsp;and Chauncey mixed up because we look more alike,\u201d Caleb&nbsp;adds, \u201cbut if me and Chauncey stand side-by-side,&nbsp;I\u2019m taller. So that\u2019s how we tell people&nbsp;how they can tell us apart.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One pseudo-discernible difference is&nbsp;a birthmark Chris&nbsp;shows off&nbsp;on his thumb.&nbsp;\u201cWhen&nbsp;we were in elementary school, we used to wear the same shoes, pants, shirts&nbsp;and&nbsp;jackets,\u201d Chauncey says. \u201cIt was fascinating. Even when we were young, most&nbsp;people couldn\u2019t tell us apart.&nbsp;We&nbsp;do our best to try to fool&nbsp;teachers just because it\u2019s fun.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They admit they haven\u2019t tried&nbsp;pranking any of their UTC instructors,&nbsp;although&nbsp;the three were jokingly asked&nbsp;to show their IDs before sitting down&nbsp;to be interviewed&nbsp;for this story.&nbsp;After laughing, the&nbsp;Figgures\u2019 purposely sat down in alphabetical order\u2014Caleb, Chauncey, Chris\u2014to&nbsp;assist with identifying who\u2019s who.&nbsp;They are, of course,&nbsp;more than three lookalikes.&nbsp;While individuals in many ways, they share common bonds&nbsp;and&nbsp;collective goals, and they want to&nbsp;achieve them&nbsp;together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cIt\u2019s very important&nbsp;that&nbsp;we pretty much experience everything together,\u201d Chris says. \u201cWe go to church together, school together. It\u2019s&nbsp;rare&nbsp;to see us apart. If, for example, one of us&nbsp;wants to&nbsp;go to the mall,&nbsp;then&nbsp;all three of us end up going to the mall.&nbsp;We have stood by each other\u2019s side&nbsp;for 22&nbsp;years, and we&nbsp;actually do&nbsp;have the same goals and&nbsp;aspirations. Once we graduate college, we want to go into broadcasting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"wait-what\" class=\"cnvs-block-section-heading cnvs-block-section-heading-1615919731753 halignleft\" >\n\t<span class=\"cnvs-section-title\">\n\t\t<span>Wait, what?<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UTC staffer&nbsp;Mike Andrews&nbsp;is the&nbsp;TV studio manager\/adviser for&nbsp;Mocs&nbsp;News&nbsp;and a&nbsp;Comm 3500&nbsp;instructor,&nbsp;a&nbsp;TV news production course. He worked with the&nbsp;trio of&nbsp;Figgures in spring semester.&nbsp;After&nbsp;opening&nbsp;the&nbsp;semester online&nbsp;due to COVID-19, Comm 3500 began meeting&nbsp;face-to-face&nbsp;twice a week on Feb. 1. The next day,&nbsp;Andrews&nbsp;had his first encounter with&nbsp;triplets.&nbsp;\u201cI haven\u2019t even had identical twins before, so this is a whole new zone for me,\u201d Andrews says.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s particularly challenging because they have masks on, so I have to figure out who\u2019s who. But what\u2019s helped me is they have assigned seating.&nbsp;So&nbsp;I know,&nbsp;\u2018OK,&nbsp;Chauncey\u2019s over here in the corner, Chris is right here, Caleb\u2019s over there.\u2019&nbsp;Eventually,&nbsp;I&nbsp;picked&nbsp;up&nbsp;on&nbsp;some of the cues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re very&nbsp;much&nbsp;at ease with each other, and there\u2019s no competitive dynamic there.&nbsp;They support each other, and it\u2019s really nice to see.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrews says it didn\u2019t take long&nbsp;for him to see how serious they&nbsp;are&nbsp;in their shared career aspirations.&nbsp;Immediately&nbsp;after&nbsp;meeting the&nbsp;Figgures, he mentioned&nbsp;Mocs&nbsp;News\u2014a student media organization&nbsp;that&nbsp;provides&nbsp;content on a local cable&nbsp;channel\u2014and&nbsp;the triplets&nbsp;wanted to be involved.&nbsp;\u201cAll three came to our next taping. Do&nbsp;you&nbsp;share&nbsp;the same feelings, like if one is sad, are all three sad? If one of&nbsp;you&nbsp;hurts an elbow,&nbsp;do the other two feel it?&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Of course, the answer&nbsp;is&nbsp;\u201cNo,\u201d&nbsp;they agree, but&nbsp;they&nbsp;do share the same dream:&nbsp;the hope of&nbsp;being in front of a television&nbsp;camera.&nbsp;TV news is an&nbsp;exceptionally competitive field. If they all&nbsp;follow that career path&nbsp;and make it in the business,&nbsp;they would likely&nbsp;have to work in different parts&nbsp;of the country.&nbsp;\u201cWe were&nbsp;talking about&nbsp;that&nbsp;not too long ago,\u201d Caleb says. \u201cAll three of us want to be on the news&nbsp;and&nbsp;we want to go into journalism. We might not&nbsp;end up&nbsp;with&nbsp;the same news station.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"bonded-for-life\" class=\"cnvs-block-section-heading cnvs-block-section-heading-1615919780224 halignleft\" >\n\t<span class=\"cnvs-section-title\">\n\t\t<span>Bonded for life<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we work together on the&nbsp;same&nbsp;news station, that would be&nbsp;fine,\u201d Chauncey says. \u201cBut&nbsp;if&nbsp;we don\u2019t,&nbsp;it\u2019s still good. We just know wherever we go, we\u2019re&nbsp;going to be&nbsp;OK.\u201d&nbsp;For now, Caleb, Chauncey and Chris want to share experiences for as long as they can.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;womb together, so we have a bond that will never be broken,\u201d Caleb says. \u201cOf course,&nbsp;we might end up in different places in the world. But I believe that our bond is&nbsp;so&nbsp;strong&nbsp;that we\u2019ll stay close to each other,&nbsp;talk with each other and just love on each other.&nbsp;Like I said, we have a bond that will never be broken.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If all goes right in their world, a time will come when the&nbsp;Figgures&nbsp;triplets can take turns pranking Chattanooga television viewers watching local newscasts. \u201cWe were thinking about this,\u201d Caleb&nbsp;Figgures&nbsp;says with a gleam in his eye, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be something if Chris went into news at Channel 9 and Chauncey at Channel 12 and me at Channel 3? Because that\u2019s what we want to do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people would be watching the news on TV and say, \u2018Hey, didn\u2019t I just see that guy on Channel 12?\u2019 Then they would turn the channel and say, \u2018Hey, didn\u2019t I just see that guy on Channel 9?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Triplets can share the same dream, right? \u201cWhat we want to accomplish in life is a great goal,&#8221; Caleb says, &#8220;and we want to do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Confusing?
