FFelicia McGhee laughs as she talks about her initial encounter with Caleb, Chauncey and Chris Figgures, triplet brothers who are now students majoring in communications at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Associate professor and department head of the UTC Department of Communication, McGhee received in 2020 an introductory email from one of the triplets seeking advisement. The key word there is \u201cone,\u201d as in McGhee knew of only one Figgures at that time. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

She remembers that the student emailing her said he was coming to UTC from Chattanooga State Community College. She knew the student wanted to pursue a career within the TV news production field.  But there was one thing she didn\u2019t know. Yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re meeting on Zoom and we\u2019re talking, and then my prospective student said he was one of three. And I immediately thought, \u2018What are you talking about?\u2019\u201d McGhee recalls. \u201cI thought I heard wrong, so I asked him, \u2018You have a twin?\u2019 And he says, \u2018No, I have two twins.\u2019 I said, \u2018I don\u2019t believe you.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen one of his brothers comes into the picture, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, wow.\u2019 And then the third brother comes into the picture. It was the funniest thing. I had to take a picture of my screen.\u201d McGhee admits she still can get mixed up by the Figgures triplets, who arrived at UTC last fall. \u201cBut when you\u2019re talking to one, you\u2019re really addressing all of them,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\t\n\t\tSimilar, but different<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So who are Caleb, Chauncey and Chris Figgures? Grade level has them as third-year students. They are the first known triplets to attend UTC at the same time. They live at home with their parents. And, while majoring in communications, they take some classes together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caleb is the youngest by one minute. Chris is the most laid-back. Chauncey is the most passionate about writing. For Black History Month in February, he wrote a daily Facebook blog celebrating African-American trailblazers. All three brothers are into social media. As a trio, they can be found on Instagram, YouTub<\/a>e and TikTok where one of their bits went viral last October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Figgures\u2019 were the first African American triplets to be born at Hutcheson Medical Center (now CHI Memorial Hospital-Georgia) in Fort Oglethorpe, and the first African American triplets to graduate from Ridgeland High School in Rossville, Georgia. \u201cCaleb is the tallest,\u201d says Chris, although you can\u2019t tell with all three sitting down. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve got a slimmer face. A lot of people get me and Chauncey mixed up because we look more alike,\u201d Caleb adds, \u201cbut if me and Chauncey stand side-by-side, I\u2019m taller. So that\u2019s how we tell people how they can tell us apart.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One pseudo-discernible difference is a birthmark Chris shows off on his thumb. \u201cWhen we were in elementary school, we used to wear the same shoes, pants, shirts and jackets,\u201d Chauncey says. \u201cIt was fascinating. Even when we were young, most people couldn\u2019t tell us apart. We do our best to try to fool teachers just because it\u2019s fun.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They admit they haven\u2019t tried pranking any of their UTC instructors, although the three were jokingly asked to show their IDs before sitting down to be interviewed for this story. After laughing, the Figgures\u2019 purposely sat down in alphabetical order\u2014Caleb, Chauncey, Chris\u2014to assist with identifying who\u2019s who. They are, of course, more than three lookalikes. While individuals in many ways, they share common bonds and collective goals, and they want to achieve them together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very important that we pretty much experience everything together,\u201d Chris says. \u201cWe go to church together, school together. It\u2019s rare to see us apart. If, for example, one of us wants to go to the mall, then all three of us end up going to the mall. We have stood by each other\u2019s side for 22 years, and we actually do have the same goals and aspirations. Once we graduate college, we want to go into broadcasting.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\t\n\t\tWait, what?<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

UTC staffer Mike Andrews is the TV studio manager\/adviser for Mocs News and a Comm 3500 instructor, a TV news production course. He worked with the trio of Figgures in spring semester. After opening the semester online due to COVID-19, Comm 3500 began meeting face-to-face twice a week on Feb. 1. The next day, Andrews had his first encounter with triplets. \u201cI haven\u2019t even had identical twins before, so this is a whole new zone for me,\u201d Andrews says. \u201cIt\u2019s particularly challenging because they have masks on, so I have to figure out who\u2019s who. But what\u2019s helped me is they have assigned seating. So I know, \u2018OK, Chauncey\u2019s over here in the corner, Chris is right here, Caleb\u2019s over there.\u2019 Eventually, I picked up on some of the cues.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re very much at ease with each other, and there\u2019s no competitive dynamic there. They support each other, and it\u2019s really nice to see.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrews says it didn\u2019t take long for him to see how serious they are in their shared career aspirations. Immediately after meeting the Figgures, he mentioned Mocs News\u2014a student media organization that provides content on a local cable channel\u2014and the triplets wanted to be involved. \u201cAll three came to our next taping. We have three cameras, and they set up on all three,\u201d Andrews continues. \u201cWe spread them out enough so that everything was fine, and it was like click, click, click. Everything went great. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI could see them somewhere down the line having their own production company. Maybe they get their first experience at television stations, then decide which way they want to go from there.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Figgures said they are asked questions all the time along the lines of: “Do you think alike? Do you share the same feelings, like if one is sad, are all three sad? If one of you hurts an elbow, do the other two feel it?” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the answer is \u201cNo,\u201d they agree, but they do share the same dream: the hope of being in front of a television camera. TV news is an exceptionally competitive field. If they all follow that career path and make it in the business, they would likely have to work in different parts of the country. \u201cWe were talking about that not too long ago,\u201d Caleb says. \u201cAll three of us want to be on the news and we want to go into journalism. We might not end up with the same news station.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\t\n\t\tBonded for life<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we work together on the same news station, that would be fine,\u201d Chauncey says. \u201cBut if we don\u2019t, it\u2019s still good. We just know wherever we go, we\u2019re going to be OK.\u201d For now, Caleb, Chauncey and Chris want to share experiences for as long as they can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were in the womb together, so we have a bond that will never be broken,\u201d Caleb says. \u201cOf course, we might end up in different places in the world. But I believe that our bond is so strong that we\u2019ll stay close to each other, talk with each other and just love on each other. Like I said, we have a bond that will never be broken.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If all goes right in their world, a time will come when the Figgures triplets can take turns pranking Chattanooga television viewers watching local newscasts. \u201cWe were thinking about this,\u201d Caleb Figgures says with a gleam in his eye, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be something if Chris went into news at Channel 9 and Chauncey at Channel 12 and me at Channel 3? Because that\u2019s what we want to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people would be watching the news on TV and say, \u2018Hey, didn\u2019t I just see that guy on Channel 12?\u2019 Then they would turn the channel and say, \u2018Hey, didn\u2019t I just see that guy on Channel 9?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Triplets can share the same dream, right? \u201cWhat we want to accomplish in life is a great goal,” Caleb says, “and we want to do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Confusing?
