Chalk it up to the \u202fMocsVision \u202fcrew, the \u202fdigital media services \u202fleg of the\u202f athletics\u202f department.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MocsVision\u202f personnel\u202f are&nbsp;behind-\u202fthe-\u202fscenes&nbsp;game production workers. You \u202fnever \u202fsee them on camera, but they are very much&nbsp;a part of&nbsp;the face of&nbsp;UTC&nbsp;athletics.\u202f&nbsp;Comprised of\u202f Assistant \u202fAthletics \u202fDirector-Digital \u202fMedia \u202fServices Leah Gill, \u202fProduction \u202fDirector Tate Johnson and \u202fProduction \u202fSpecialist Abby Walker, \u202fthey&nbsp;produce \u202f65 broadcasts of \u202fMocs Athletics events. \u202fThey also\u202f create\u202f graphics, video pieces that appear on social media, \u202fpodcasts \u202fand many other\u202f functions \u202fsuch \u202fas engineering, staffing \u202fand teaching.&nbsp;And&nbsp;that doesn\u2019t include \u202fthe grunt work of setting up, breaking down and moving equipment.\u202f&nbsp;\u201cOn a game day, I usually do about three jobs,\u201d Walker says. \u201cWe\u2019re all good at multitasking.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;trio&nbsp;makes&nbsp;it \u202feasy \u202ffor ESPN to take \u202fMocs \u202fcontent and put it on air, bringing national and international exposure to UTC&nbsp;athletics.\u202f In \u202fa \u202ftime \u202fwhen \u202fthe \u202fUniversity\u2019s sports teams\u202f had\u202f limited\u202f numbers of \u202ffans \u202fin the stands \u202fdue to&nbsp;the&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;pandemic,&nbsp;more eyes&nbsp;have been \u202fwatching \u202fthe \u202fMocsVision \u202fgroup \u202fthan ever before. \u202f\u202f\u201cSo \u202fmuch of \u202fwhat we do is practice and teamwork, just as a sports team does,&#8221; Gill says. \u201cWe always talk about \u202fthings like, \u202f\u2018That was a great broadcast;\u202f everything fired on all cylinders.\u2019\u202f And&nbsp;to do that, everybody \u202fhas to\u202f do their job. \u202fEverything has to click.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"workload-increased\" class=\"cnvs-block-section-heading cnvs-block-section-heading-1615920946305 halignleft\" >\n\t<span class=\"cnvs-section-title\">\n\t\t<span><strong>Workload increased<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Southern Conference\u2019s ESPN package puts\u202f all production responsibilities on \u202fits \u202fschools, and all conference members\u202f have their own\u202f crews&nbsp;producing content for\u202f ESPN+,\u202f a streaming subscription service considered a complement to existing ESPN content.\u202f \u202fUsually, \u202fMocsVision \u202fcan&nbsp;spread its 65-event\u202f content \u202ffrom mid-August to May.&nbsp;But&nbsp;thanks to the pandemic and the movement of most UTC fall sports to the spring, the bulk of\u202f Mocs \u202fevents overlapped&nbsp;this year&nbsp;in February and March.\u202f It has&nbsp;kept&nbsp;the MocsVision group busy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:39% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-1024x662.jpg);background-position:80% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"662\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-1024x662.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1656 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-1024x662.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-380x246.jpg 380w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859-800x517.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1859.jpg 1136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>It\u00a0also\u00a0has given them\u00a0a time to shine.\u202f Case in point: Over one four-day stretch in February, the\u202f Mocs\u202f were featured\u00a0in two extended segments\u202f during \u202fthe \u202fmidnight edition of\u00a0SportsCenter \u202fand other ESPN highlight shows.\u202f\u201cSometimes you get a magic play, a magic moment or a magic storyline that lends itself to that,\u201d Gill says,\u202f\u201cbut I also know if it was two-and-a-half-minutes of a broadcast\u202f and the quality \u202fdidn\u2019t look \u202fright, ESPN would not give you \u202fthat.\u00a0They \u202fmight mention it and show a short clip, but they\u2019re not going to give you much\u202f airtime \u202funless it\u2019s quality. \u202fSo \u202fit\u2019s rewarding and feels good when that happens.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Tate Johnson<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gill\u202f has been involved with Mocs \u202fproductions \u202fsince 2006 \u202fand came onboard full-time&nbsp;at UTC&nbsp;in 2011.\u202f Her role includes overseeing \u202fcrews \u202ffor game days. For football, a&nbsp;crew of camera and technical personnel could be 18\u202f to \u202f20 people. Basketball&nbsp;uses some 15 people and&nbsp;volleyball&nbsp;uses&nbsp;six.&nbsp;She explains that the\u202f ESPN+&nbsp;productions \u202fare just a part of what they \u202fdo.&nbsp;\u201cWe do \u202fthe \u202fin-venue video \u202fboard \u202fwork \u202ffor basketball and football&nbsp;while the games are in progress, and \u202fwe&nbsp;also&nbsp;do\u202f creative content production,\u201d\u202f Gill \u202fsays.\u202f\u201cThe video\u202fboard is my favorite.&nbsp;I like to live in&nbsp;the&nbsp;game presentation world.\u202f Abby is our point person for our ESPN broadcasts in terms of producing the game itself,\u202f and Tate is\u202f our\u202f storyteller and content creator.\u201d \u202fThese three colleagues\u202f are\u202f accustomed to\u202f wearing \u202fmany hats.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy new normal is&nbsp;performing as&nbsp;a Swiss army knife. You can throw me wherever you need \u202fme,&nbsp;and I\u2019ll get it done, somehow,\u201d Johnson\u202f says. \u201cYesterday, \u202fI ran graphics on a volleyball game. \u202fIt was my second time doing that&nbsp;but,\u202f you know, it\u2019s all about a learning curve. \u202fSo \u202fI\u2019ve been really lucky this year to be given many opportunities.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"working-with-puzzle-pieces-on-fire\" class=\"cnvs-block-section-heading cnvs-block-section-heading-1615920940677 halignleft\" >\n\t<span class=\"cnvs-section-title\">\n\t\t<span><strong>Working with Puzzle Pieces on fire<\/strong><\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Walker\u202f describes the controlled chaos as a combination of fun and frenzy. \u202f\u201cThere\u2019s always something happening. It\u2019s like there are 1,000-piece puzzles around you \u202fand you have to put them together, yet some of them are on fire.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;A \u202f2018 graduate of the UTC School of Communication, \u202fWalker \u202fhas \u202fa laundry list of to-dos on game day, including\u2014but not limited to\u2014getting\u202f team \u202frosters, head shots,\u202fcreating \u202fgraphics, updating statistics,&nbsp;uncovering&nbsp;key storylines, writing the scripts\u202f and\u202f making sure \u202fshe has the \u202fcommercials and the \u202fsponsor logos\u202f the broadcast needs.\u202f&nbsp;\u201cI would say my mindset as a producer is, \u202f\u2018How much can I do pregame to make it easier on\u202f the crew and me?\u2019 \u202fGameday&nbsp;is usually \u202fchaotic, \u202fand you never know what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d she says.\u202f\u201cAnd \u202fif something does happen during the broadcast,\u202f you have to do it all quietly.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 46%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-1024x672.jpg);background-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-1024x672.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1658 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-1024x672.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-768x504.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-380x250.jpg 380w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1-800x525.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2021\/03\/Mocs-Vision-21-1797-1.jpg 1136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cNobody at home can know you\u2019re having problems.\u202f It\u2019s\u00a0very much Wizard of Oz, paying attention to the people behind the curtain. You\u2019re on \u202fa \u202fheadset and you\u00a0have to\u00a0communicate everything with your crew, whether you can see it or not, and you\u00a0have to\u00a0know all the\u00a0puzzles in your head.\u201d\u202f\u00a0Under ordinary circumstances, there is constant juggling.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-small-font-size\"><em>Leah Gill<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;the pandemic has\u202f changed their way of doing business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn\u202f interesting challenge for us\u202fhas been\u202f our\u202fnormal pregame \u202froutine,\u201d Gill says.&nbsp;\u201cNormally, \u202fwe \u202fget the entire team together before games to\u202f talk. With COVID,\u202four whole crew could get contact-traced if one person gets\u202fin contact&nbsp;with a virus-positive person. We don\u2019t want to have to cancel broadcasts, so we\u2019ve had to change the way we do&nbsp;things.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because&nbsp;Mocs football was&nbsp;postponed&nbsp;last fall, the\u202f MocsVision \u202fgroup \u202fproduced tennis \u202fand golf\u202f for the first time,\u202f\u201cand there wasn\u2019t much \u202fof a \u202fblueprint on how to do those,\u201d Walker says. \u202f\u201cGolf was something that we hadn\u2019t seen,&nbsp;and we were excited for the opportunity to\u202f take on&nbsp;a new&nbsp;production. It was \u202fdefinitely an \u202fexperience, and I learned a lot from it.\u202f And then we were able to do tennis, too, and I really enjoyed that.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When non-revenue sports \u202fsuch as tennis and golf \u202fget television coverage, it\u202f becomes a\u202f tremendous\u202f recruiting tool for&nbsp;those&nbsp;program coaches.\u202f&nbsp;\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Gill says,\u202f\u201cand we were excited to do&nbsp;our work&nbsp;for those sports.\u202f We are also going to be doing soccer for the first time on ESPN\u202f in the&nbsp;spring.\u202f So\u202f once again \u202fthere \u202fwill be a case of, \u202f\u2018All right, let it \u202ffly and see where it goes.\u2019\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three-woman&nbsp;MocsVision team are major multitaskers on game&nbsp;days\u202f&nbsp;
