You get a feel for&nbsp;the&nbsp;different parts of the university and how the university works.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also get to work&nbsp;closely&nbsp;with alumni volunteers, and that\u2019s how I first met Jayne Holder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"cs-embed cs-embed-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jayne Holder | A Lifelong Moc\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M-ge4j66jJs?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be almost impossible to spend any length of time&nbsp;at&nbsp;the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga&nbsp;over the last&nbsp;30 years and not know Jayne.&nbsp;She&nbsp;has been&nbsp;an ambassador for the Mocs&nbsp;and the&nbsp;University, sporting blue and gold as&nbsp;the unofficial mayor of Chattanooga.&nbsp;What started as a&nbsp;professional connection&nbsp;blossomed into a friendship.&nbsp;We&nbsp;were both Alpha&nbsp;Delta Pi sorority members;&nbsp;we had mutual&nbsp;contacts;&nbsp;and she took on&nbsp;positions&nbsp;of increasing prominence,&nbsp;eventually becoming&nbsp;the alumni board president.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in that role,&nbsp;we&nbsp;had an administrative assistant position&nbsp;become available.&nbsp;I remember&nbsp;talking&nbsp;to the&nbsp;former&nbsp;chancellor, Fred Obear,&nbsp;about&nbsp;hiring&nbsp;Jayne&nbsp;to join my staff,&nbsp;and he said&nbsp;to me,&nbsp;\u201cI know you and Jayne are really good friends, so&nbsp;I&nbsp;have a question for you.&nbsp;Can you fire her?\u201d&nbsp;i&nbsp;said,&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m not going to need to&nbsp;fire&nbsp;her. There\u2019s no way I\u2019ll have to worry about that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Hire people smarter than you&nbsp;that&nbsp;will&nbsp;make you look good.&nbsp;That\u2019s what Jayne did for me.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And he said,&nbsp;\u201cI want you to think about that question.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because he&nbsp;had been a&nbsp;chancellor&nbsp;here for many years,&nbsp;it made me really think,&nbsp;and it&nbsp;turned out to be&nbsp;one of the best lessons I learned in management.&nbsp;You&nbsp;must&nbsp;separate&nbsp;the&nbsp;friendship&nbsp;part out of&nbsp;a&nbsp;job.&nbsp;That doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t recognize talent, though, and&nbsp;Jayne&nbsp;was a great hire. She&nbsp;taught me another&nbsp;excellent management lesson: Hire people smarter than you&nbsp;that&nbsp;will&nbsp;make you look good.&nbsp;That\u2019s what Jayne did for me. She had my weaknesses covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:24% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"452\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/10\/Terry-Jayne-white-coats-retouched2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/10\/Terry-Jayne-white-coats-retouched2-1.jpg 452w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/10\/Terry-Jayne-white-coats-retouched2-1-177x300.jpg 177w, https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/10\/Terry-Jayne-white-coats-retouched2-1-380x646.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>I&nbsp;have&nbsp;always&nbsp;been&nbsp;about&nbsp;school spirit, so I&nbsp;used to make&nbsp;our staff dress alike as often as possible. It&nbsp;became&nbsp;a running joke with people&nbsp;at&nbsp;UT&nbsp;and at the system level.&nbsp;Now we do it by accident.&nbsp;A&nbsp;couple of years ago, Jayne and I&nbsp;were going&nbsp;to a legislative network meeting in Nashville.&nbsp;When I&nbsp;came to campus to pick her up, we&nbsp;had on&nbsp;almost the&nbsp;same&nbsp;outfits,&nbsp;down to our&nbsp;white winter&nbsp;overcoats.&nbsp;We didn\u2019t have&nbsp;time&nbsp;to&nbsp;change,&nbsp;so&nbsp;when we got to the&nbsp;meeting&nbsp;and&nbsp;people&nbsp;saw us dressed alike, they&nbsp;were in hysterics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayne&nbsp;has&nbsp;provided many&nbsp;laughs over the years.&nbsp;One time,&nbsp;I was giving&nbsp;a presentation at a conference in Atlanta&nbsp;about collaborations between&nbsp;alumni&nbsp;affairs and&nbsp;athletics, and&nbsp;I&nbsp;thought it would be great if Scrappy came and participated as part of the presentation. The student who was Scrappy at the time couldn\u2019t attend because he had class, so&nbsp;I&nbsp;convinced Jayne to be Scrappy.&nbsp;Imagine trying to give a&nbsp;presentation with Jayne&nbsp;walking around flapping her wings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After I became&nbsp;Chancellor Roger Brown\u2019s&nbsp;chief of&nbsp;staff&nbsp;in 2006,&nbsp;Jayne was&nbsp;under consideration for&nbsp;the alumni&nbsp;director role. I remember her&nbsp;saying,&nbsp;\u201cI don\u2019t know that I could do the job.\u201d&nbsp;I told her,&nbsp;\u201cAre you kidding me, Jayne? We\u2019ve been grooming you&nbsp;for that job.\u201d&nbsp;It was&nbsp;a&nbsp;no-brainer.&nbsp;A&nbsp;great&nbsp;alumni&nbsp;director&nbsp;educates&nbsp;students when they first come to the university&nbsp;so that they\u2019ll&nbsp;want to&nbsp;stay involved&nbsp;after they graduate, and that\u2019s what Jayne did.&nbsp;She was very good&nbsp;at&nbsp;details.&nbsp;She never&nbsp;met&nbsp;a stranger. She has&nbsp;terrific&nbsp;ideas on how to engage people.&nbsp;And,&nbsp;of course,&nbsp;she&nbsp;loves the university.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayne retired on June 30 this year, and UTC will not be the same&nbsp;without her.&nbsp;Between the two of us, we spent almost 35 years as the leaders of alumni affairs,&nbsp;which is&nbsp;virtually&nbsp;unheard of.&nbsp;&nbsp;We haven\u2019t talked&nbsp;about it&nbsp;a lot,&nbsp;but it will be&nbsp;our&nbsp;shared&nbsp;legacy&nbsp;and&nbsp;something&nbsp;we were&nbsp;proud to do&nbsp;together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&nbsp;I promise that,&nbsp;purely coincidentally, Jayne and I will show&nbsp;up at some&nbsp;function&nbsp;wearing&nbsp;similar outfits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I&nbsp;have always said&nbsp;that&nbsp;working in alumni affairs is the&nbsp;best job at a university because you work with students, you&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":1277,"featured_media":1056,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[101011,9291],"tags":[],"coauthors":[100994],"class_list":{"0":"post-791","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-fall-2020-edition","8":"category-notabilis","9":"cs-entry","10":"cs-video-wrap"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
