Memories of the past energize ‘Unmasking: Elders Speak’
Twelve Chattanooga residents, ranging in age from their 70s to 98 years old, agreed to have their life memories—good and bad—transformed into dramatic monologues for “Unmasking: Elders Speak.” The production is helmed by Dr. Peggy Douglas, adjunct professor of economics in the Gary W. Rollins College of Business at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Dr. Anne Swedberg, associate professor of theater at UTC.
UTC STEM professor helps Hamilton County Schools master ‘computational thinking’
Dr. Stephanie Philipp, UTC assistant professor of education and interim director of the STEM Education Program, recently hosted 45 Hamilton County teachers—half of whom are UTC graduates, according to a show of hands. Philipp’s half-day cohort was funded as part of a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Westbrook Scholarship: Helping UTC chemistry and physics students for 30 years
For 30 years, the Westbrook Scholarship Program has helped first-year chemistry and physics students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga complete their degrees. The scholarship provides $14,000 over four years to eligible incoming freshmen in the UTC Department of Chemistry and Physics.

“My story is about American generosity and opportunity,” said UTC graduate Cap Nguyen, an honors student and an active Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers member while at UTC. “I believe that UTC took a chance on me and gave me a great opportunity. It provided me the skill set that changed my life outlook drastically.”
Milestones: UTC to honor staff and faculty at Service Awards luncheon
This year, 199 members of the UTC family will be honored for reaching significant service milestones at the UTC Service Awards Annual Luncheon on Tuesday, Sept. 12—one of the highlights of Founder’s Week. The luncheon is an opportunity for University administrators to express their gratitude for the employees’ dedicated service.
