Step into campus life: Welcome Week 2024 welcomes new Mocs to UTC
UTC is gearing up for another exciting Welcome Week, an annual tradition that introduces new students to campus life. This year’s festivities, which take place from Sunday, Aug. 18, through Saturday, Aug. 24, are set to kick off with the Oak Street Roast—marking the beginning of a week chockful of opportunities for students to connect, explore and immerse themselves in the UTC community.
UTC to celebrate Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month, and the UTC Center for Women and Gender Equity will honor and celebrate women’s contributions to history. “This is just a great time to talk and highlight the historical context of what does it mean to be where we are today as women and how did we get here?” said Lauren Ouwerkerk, associate director of WaGE and the Prism Center.
Happy Anniversary: MCC, WaGE celebrate 15 years of providing UTC students a ‘sense of belonging’
For 15 years, the Multicultural Center and the Center for Women and Gender Equity have provided safe spaces for students at UTC. The organizations will jointly celebrate their 15th anniversaries with a reception from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, at Lupton Hall.
An ode to the arts: UTC Black History Month calendar features theatre, dance, art … and even yoga
UTC Black History Month 2024 kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 1, and this year’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” Among the event highlights is a three-night reenactment, “Baldwin vs. Buckley” as performed by the New York-based american vicarious theatre group.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will celebrate its 11th UTC MLK Day by bringing a pair of co-headliners to Chattanooga. Dr. Bernice A. King and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz will be the keynote speakers for the UTC MLK Day 2024 celebration taking place at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium Walker Theatre.
Opening inner doors: Bliss Murphy came out of her shell during a busy freshman year
Bliss Murphy’s freshman year, along with the usual load of classes, was filled to the brim. During the academic year, she was a member or involved with 18 different on-campus groups or organizations, including the Center for Women and Gender Equity, the Wildlife and Zoology Club, the Ecological Decisions for a Global Environment (EDGE), Healing Through Harmony music therapy group and Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavor (URaCE).
During Julia Stranahan’s time at UTC, “I learned a lot about being a leader”
Julia Stranahan, who will be graduating on May 6, has had numerous leadership opportunities at UTC, including being a member of the Freshman Senate, an orientation leader and the facilitator of the Feminist Action Movement. She also served in a statewide office as lobbying director of the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature.
