November is the peak performance month for the Music Department, when you can catch everything from jazz concerts to string ensembles.

\n\u201cNovember is crazy with concerts, because all the different ensembles have their concerts at the end of the semester,\u201d explains Madison Dell, a senior music major. \u201cThere\u2019s something almost every night in November. We have so much going on. We have student recitals, orchestral concerts, and other performances all this month.\u201d<\/p>\n

All music department performances start at 7:30 p.m. and take place in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, unless otherwise noted, and most of them are free or discounted to students.<\/p>\n

Head to the Roland Hayes Concert Hall on November 13 where the UTC Jazz Band will showcase its talent. Listen to works in a variety of styles from some of music\u2019s master musicians including: Jimmy McHugh, Ted Koehler, Harold Arlen, Arturo Sandoval, Quincy Jones, Richard Rodgers, Thelonious Monk, and Cootie Williams. The performance will also feature guest vocalists Amy Oaks and Alea Tveit.<\/p>\n

\u201cJazz band is really accessible. They play tunes you\u2019ll probably know. You\u2019ll definitely be able to get into it, maybe even dance a little,\u201d says Dell.<\/p>\n

This year, the UTC Chamber Singers will be joining the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Chorus to perform a spectacular rendition of Mozart\u2019s Requiem at the Tivoli on November 14<\/a>. Tickets are $33 and up and will be sold at the Tivoli box office or the CSO website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The UTC Chattanooga Singers and Chamber Singers will present their fall choral concert on November 15. Highlights include Louis Vierne\u2019s \u201cSolemn Mass, Opus 16,\u201d Blake R. Henson\u2019s \u201cMy Flight for Heaven,\u201d Ralph Vaughan Williams\u2019 \u201cSweet Day,\u201d Benjamin Britten\u2019s \u201cA Hymn to the Virgin,\u201d and Samuel Barber\u2019s \u201cAgnus Dei.\u201d This concert will be at St. Paul\u2019s Episcopal Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeat Hunger\u201d is the annual fall percussion concert. This event has been a popular staple of the Music Department for more than a decade. It has been so popular past that it is a two night event, occurring November 24-25.<\/p>\n

The performance will include songs such as \u201cTrio Per Uno,\u201d \u201c Crecendo,\u201d \u201cWinter Nocturns,\u201d and \u201cSong of the Mountain Stream.\u201d Guest performers Funkabucket, a street percussion group consisting mainly of UTC alumni, will play in the lobby on improvised percussion instruments. The concert will also continue the tradition of featuring surprise guests not listed in the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you come, you\u2019re going to hear a great concert, you\u2019re going to feed some hungry people right here at the holidays, and you\u2019re going to have a great time,\u201d says percussion director and originator of the Beat Hunger Event, Dr. Monte Coulter. \u201cEverybody wins. The audience gets a great concert, the community kitchen gets mountains of food and monetary support, and the players get a huge, appreciative audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

In lieu of an admission price, the Music Department will be accepting nonperishable donations for the Chattanooga Food Bank.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of things happening here in Chattanooga, specifically on campus, that people might not be aware of. There is a good variety of events that come along in the course of the year,\u201d says Dr. Lee Harris, Head of the Department of Music. \u201cIt\u2019s really a cultural resource for the greater community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The department is also presenting The Trumpet Festival of the Southeast, a celebration of trumpet performance and education. The 2014 festival will be held at UTC Fine Arts Center from January 17 – 19. This three-day event includes concerts, master classes, trumpet ensemble performance opportunities, festival ensembles, and exhibits. As one of the nation’s premiere regional trumpet conferences, it hosts as many as 300 participants from several southern states.<\/p>\n

Admission to the jam session and guest artist concerts are free of charge and open to the general public. Participants in other festival activities must register to participate. To register, simply download and fill out the Participant Registration Form<\/a>. Festival registration is $40 if postmarked by December 13. Registration after December 13 is $50.<\/p>\n
