{"id":10216,"date":"2013-12-05T15:28:49","date_gmt":"2013-12-05T20:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=10216"},"modified":"2013-12-05T16:10:10","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T21:10:10","slug":"utc-challenger-stem-learning-center-featured-in-space-travel-discussion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2013\/12\/utc-challenger-stem-learning-center-featured-in-space-travel-discussion\/","title":{"rendered":"UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center featured in space travel discussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><em>By Zach Taylor, University Relations Student Writer\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In support of the world\u2019s first commercial space flight in 2014, the UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center participated in a live Google Hangout streamed live around the world.\u00a0\u00a0 The event was sponsored by the National Challenger Center Network, Virgin Galactic, and Galactic Unite.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Google Hangout was held Tuesday, December 3 at noon.\u00a0 See it in its entirety at <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/+VirginGalactic\">https:\/\/plus.google.com\/+VirginGalactic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the Google Hangout, a group of students from Ooltewah Middle School took a simulated mission to the moon at the UTC Challenger Stem Learning Center.\u00a0 Following the mission, the Ooletwah students joined Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, founding chairman of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, and Perry Storey, Director of the UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center to form one of five groups from Challenger Learning Centers across the country that participated in a live question and answer session with a panel of Virgin Galactic Future Astronauts and Virgin Galactic representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The panel included:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Will Pomerantz \u2013 Virgin Galactic Vice President of Special Projects<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Marissa Good \u2013 Virgin Galactic Propulsions Design Engineer<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Loretta Whitesides \u2013 Virgin Galactic Future Astronaut Galactic Unite Program and Partnerships Committee Chair<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ron Rosano \u2013 Virgin Galactic Future Astronaut Galactic Unite Program &amp; Partnerships Committee Member<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Edwin Sahakian \u2013 Virgin Galactic Future Astronaut<\/p>\n<p>Students from Ooltewah Middle asked several questions.\u00a0 \u201cWill Virgin Galactic ever build a space hotel?\u201d asked one student.\u00a0 Whitesides was enthusiastic in her response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope so, I\u2019d like to stay there!\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cI love it that you guys are thinking about futuristic things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. June Scobee Rodgers expressed her appreciation for the Google Hangout and the future astronauts.\u00a0 \u201cWe all want to know where we can sign up for a flight,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The first commercial space flight is scheduled for August 2014, as Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, his two children, and yet to be named passengers and crew will be carried to an altitude of 68 miles on a suborbital trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/challenger-stem-learning-center\/\">UTC Challenger STEM Center<\/a>, call (423) 425-4126.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In support of the world\u2019s first commercial space flight in 2014, the UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center participated in a live Google Hangout streamed live around the world.
