Bulla that was recently released by Transaction Publishers.<\/p>\n<p>Sachsman\u2019s interview also covered the Symposium on the 19th Century Press, the Civil War, and Free Expression, held in Chattanooga.\u00a0 Sachsman serves as director of the annual three day event, which began in 1993 when a steering committee of journalism historians met to organize the first meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The conference provides an opportunity for the presentation of papers on U.S. mass media of the 19th century, the Civil War in fiction and history, freedom of expression in the 19th century, presidents and the 19th century press, images of race and gender in the 19th century press, and sensationalism and crime in 19th century newspapers.\u00a0 In his interview, Sachsman described the four additional books that have come from the conference:\u00a0<i>The Civil War and the Press<\/i> (2000); <i>Memory and Myth: The Civil War in Fiction and Film from Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin to Cold Mountain<\/i>\u00a0(2007),\u00a0<i>Words at War: The Civil War and American Journalism\u00a0(2008), and Seeking a Voice: Images of Race and Gender in the 19th Century Press<\/i>\u00a0(2009).<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the Symposium on the 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century Press, the Civil War, and Free Expression \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/west-chair-communication\/?id=WestChairOfExcellenceInCommunication\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid Sachsman&#8217;s books are an outstanding academic accomplishment. He is a gifted academician and we were very proud that C-SPAN selected him to do an author&#8217;s piece about his writing. This interview gave the Communication Department, one of only 111 programs accredited in journalism and mass communication in the country, national exposure on a vital topic; the press and the media,\u201d said Dr. Betsy Alderman, Head of the Communication Department.<\/p>\n<p>Cox\u2019s interview focused on the University\u2019s Lupton Library Special Collections assemblage of letters and documents written by Civil War Union Officer John T. Wilder. The collection offers an in-depth and varied look at Chattanooga and the surrounding area during that time in history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talked about, displayed, and read from several letters Wilder wrote to his wife during the Civil War. We also discussed Wilder\u2019s move to Chattanooga after the war, being elected mayor of Chattanooga, and establishing himself as a major industrialist in the reconstruction South,\u201d said Cox.<\/p>\n<p>These interviews, as well as many other specials regarding Chattanooga, will air on C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3 (Comcast channels 104 and 105) during the weekend of January 18-19.
