Angle was named chancellor in March 2013 and assumed the office on July 1.\u00a0 But he worked with Interim Chancellor Grady Bogue to fill some critical leadership positions during the period\u00a0before he came to Chattanooga. Angle comes to Chattanooga from Wright State University, where he served as a senior vice president. Read more about Chancellor Angle here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With his first semester behind him, Angle speaks of enrollment, growth, and the future.<\/p>\n

<\/i><\/b>UTC has been experiencing tremendous\u00a0<\/i><\/b>enrollment growth over the past few\u00a0<\/i><\/b>years. How big do you think UTC\u00a0<\/i><\/b>should grow?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/b>I think 15,000 is a reasonable number\u00a0for UTC. We\u2019re right now at almost\u00a012,000. We don\u2019t want to be too big,\u00a0because we\u2019d lose who we are. I don\u2019t\u00a0think Chattanooga needs a campus\u00a0of 25,000 or even 20,000 but 15,000\u00a0is a good critical mass number\u2014it\u2019s a\u00a0good planning number. I think we\u2019re a\u00a0wonderful size where we are right now.<\/p>\n

What are some of the things you feel are\u00a0<\/i><\/b>UTC\u2019s and Chattanooga\u2019s strengths?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/b>I think that the strength is the people.\u00a0Certainly Chattanooga is an incredible\u00a0place to be. We have a great campus; the\u00a0facilities are wonderful, but what really\u00a0make us shine are the warmth and the\u00a0sincerity of all of the people who are the\u00a0University, who are Chattanooga.<\/p>\n

So then, what about the challenges?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

There are physical challenges to address\u00a0as we grow, especially right now in\u00a0student housing. We\u2019re putting a number\u00a0of students each fall in the Chattanooga\u00a0Choo Choo hotel. We\u2019d like to have\u00a0them all on campus. We think we\u2019re\u00a0short about 600 beds, and we could\u00a0probably fill a thousand if we had them.\u00a0We\u2019ll probably break ground in 2015 for\u00a0construction on a dorm to open in 2017.<\/p>\n

Having students living on campus is so\u00a0important. It creates a 24-hour-a-day\u00a0adrenaline rush, blood flowing for what\u2019s\u00a0going on. If you\u2019re on campus, you will\u00a0go down and hear that lecture, or see\u00a0that musical group perform, and take\u00a0advantage of all the wonderful things\u00a0that we\u2019ve got on campus.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve told people that my two priorities\u00a0are students getting a quality education\u00a0and our connections to the community.\u00a0We\u2019re focusing on student success.\u00a0The bottom line metrics of graduation\u00a0rates, first-to-second-year retention,\u00a0second-to-third year retention, these\u00a0statistics are important. But the quality\u00a0of that experience is important as well.\u00a0Participation in student government,\u00a0on a newspaper staff, in competitive\u00a0athletics\u2014these are as important\u00a0as performance in a musical group,\u00a0on stage, or in a research laboratory.\u00a0Engaging our students in life, education,\u00a0working together as a team, and using\u00a0our community as the laboratory where\u00a0we can do all of this, to get out and\u00a0impact our community in a positive\u00a0way\u2014these are essential to our success.<\/p>\n

When you talk about strengthening\u00a0<\/i><\/b>campus connections, what would those\u00a0<\/i><\/b>look like?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

It is critical that our students are doing\u00a0service learning projects with nonprofits,\u00a0with our local city and county\u00a0governments. We should be impacting\u00a0businesses. Our students should be\u00a0out there in the community. We need\u00a0to make sure that we are looking at\u00a0problems that are of significance to local\u00a0business in our community.<\/p>\n

Right now we\u2019re evaluating our\u00a0intramural facilities, trying to figure out\u00a0what do we really need for a campus of\u00a0our size. Depending on what we do, we\u00a0can impact youth leagues, soccer, and\u00a0other athletics so that there is a positive\u00a0synergy and we\u2019re adding back to the\u00a0community.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Are there particular areas that have\u00a0<\/i><\/b>come to your attention as you\u2019ve been\u00a0<\/i><\/b>out meeting community leaders?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

One topic that continues to come up\u00a0is \u2018Where does a business owner go\u00a0for help, or how does someone to hire\u00a0interns?\u2019 Where is that front door for\u00a0the University? Who do you contact and\u00a0how do we make sure to follow up? I\u00a0see that as a huge need for us. For\u00a0students to get a job, that experience\u00a0in the real world, applying what they\u2019ve\u00a0learned in the classroom is so valuable\u00a0to them. We need to make this process\u00a0easier to understand.<\/p>\n

The Tennessee General Assembly and\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Governor Haslam seem to be making\u00a0<\/i><\/b>higher education a priority. Why?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

In a knowledge-based economy,\u00a0to attract and retain businesses in\u00a0Tennessee, we need the educated\u00a0workforce. The Drive to 55 is aimed\u00a0at providing 55 percent of the state\u00a0population with an advanced certificate\u00a0degree or graduate degree to provide\u00a0that trained workforce that\u2019s needed\u00a0for the jobs of today and of the future.\u00a0The projection for Tennessee is that for\u00a0our economy in 2025, we will need 55\u00a0percent of our population to have postsecondary\u00a0education of some level.<\/p>\n

The Complete College Tennessee\u00a0Act was intended to provide the right\u00a0incentives for higher education to\u00a0focus on graduation and to increase\u00a0educational attainment levels in the\u00a0state of Tennessee. In the past, state\u00a0funding formulas incentivized filling\u00a0seats. Now we\u2019re focusing on completion\u00a0of courses, completion of credit hours,\u00a0and then moving on to graduation.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where there\u2019s an incentive in our\u00a0funding formula. The entire nation is\u00a0going this way. More than 30 states are\u00a0already focusing on outcomes formulas.\u00a0This only incentivizes what we need\u00a0to do anyway, which is focus on our\u00a0students. That\u2019s what we\u2019re about as an\u00a0institution, that is our job\u2014students and\u00a0their success and the quality of\u00a0their education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
