the 2009 Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Alabama at Auburn University April 16-19.\u00a0 This year\u2019s entry was an entirely new vehicle built and designed \u201cfrom the ground up\u201d is the use of a hydrostatic transmission,\u201d Klingler said.\u00a0 \u201cIn the past a belt driven continuously variable transmission has been used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klingler said there are no gears and no belts in this type of vehicle\u2014he compared it to an automatic transmission.\u00a0 Only three hydrostatic transmission vehicles were entered into the race.\u00a0 Klinger said by ranking 16th overall and 15th in the endurance race, the Racing Mocs gave the reputation of the hydrostatic transmission vehicle \u201ca good leg up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Baja SAE Alabama event was one of three regional competitions where engineering students must design and build an off-road vehicle.\u00a0 They are also responsible for planning and manufacturing some parts of their entry.<\/p>\n<p>Students participated in four short dynamic events: Acceleration; Traction (the former \u201cLog Pull\u201d); Maneuverability and Suspension (the former \u201cSuspension and Traction\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 An endurance event, the Guardrail Jump and a bumpy ride on \u201cSkid Road\u201d finished the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Saying this was \u201cone of the best Baja teams ever at UTC,\u201d Klingler was proud that everyone got along well and worked together for a great finish.<\/p>\n<p>The hallmark of the SAE Baja Society competition is a friendly give and take between teams, and team members said this year everyone was very helpful.\u00a0 The Racing Mocs enjoyed assisting other teams and in turn receiving assistance from others when needed.\u00a0 \u201cWe got suggestions from other teams right on the spot, helping us decide what works,\u201d said team member Matt Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>This year DENSO North America Corporation provided the UTC team with a $7000 grant.\u00a0 Dr. Rob Goulet, who has served as faculty advisor for the UTC Mini Baja participants, received the grant approval from DENSO.\u00a0 DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc. is a global company located in Maryville.\u00a0 It is one of the world\u2019s largest manufacturers of advanced technology, components and systems for all major automakers.<\/p>\n<p>Additional sponsors include Hydrogear and Alstom.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty who attended and supported the team at the competition included\u00a0 Dean Will Sutton and Drs.Gary McDonald, Charles Knight and Ron Goulet.<\/p>\n<p>The 2009 UTC team includes:<br \/>\nBen Klingler
