\"ASCE<\/a><\/p>\n

Concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions were the highlights of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Conference, hosted last week by The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.\u00a0 UTC engineering students competed against students from Auburn, University of Alabama, University of Florida, University of Miami, University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.\u00a0 Twenty-seven colleges and universities in all attended.<\/p>\n

\"ASCE<\/p>\n

UTC ranked 11th<\/sup> for all competitions and overall, beating teams from Vanderbilt University, Tennessee Tech, and University of Alabama.\u00a0 In the Concrete Canoe Competition, UTC came in at 13, ahead of Tennessee Tech, Auburn University, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. \u00a0\u00a0Visit the Southeast Conference ASCE 2015<\/a> to view all the rankings.<\/p>\n

Tests were conducted on the steel bridge entries in Maclellan Gym.\u00a0 Two of the tests measured the amount of deflection or movement each steel bridge will endure under force.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the vertical test, force is added to the top of the structure and it has to hold the weight,\u201d said Elizabeth Nelson, a UTC chemical engineering student who helped plan the conference.\u00a0 \u201cIf the bridge drops too much with the force on top, the bridge fails the test.\u00a0 In the horizontal deflection test, force pulls the bridge.\u00a0 It cannot tilt from the original position.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"ASCE<\/a><\/p>\n

An interdisciplinary team of engineering students created the UTC steel bridge entry, led by students Bethany Griffin and Elliot Thaxton.\u00a0 Thaxton said each steel \u201cmember\u201d of the bridge\u2019s structure cannot exceed 15 pounds and 36 inches in length.\u00a0 He said he enjoyed working with the team to plan and build the UTC entry.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou grow respect for everyone\u2019s discipline,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIn a professional setting, projects require input from different engineering disciplines.\u00a0 Everyone involved looks at the project from a different perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"ASCE<\/a><\/p>\n

Teams displayed their concrete canoes on campus in Heritage Plaza. \u00a0The canoes were placed in a \u201cswamp box\u201d filled with water to see if they float.<\/p>\n

The canoes were launched into the chilly waters of Chester Frost Park, where men\u2019s, women\u2019s and co-ed races were conducted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
