{"id":13615,"date":"2015-04-17T16:20:02","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T20:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=13615"},"modified":"2015-04-17T16:20:02","modified_gmt":"2015-04-17T20:20:02","slug":"college-of-engineering-and-computer-science-presents-assistive-technology-projects-april-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2015\/04\/college-of-engineering-and-computer-science-presents-assistive-technology-projects-april-21\/","title":{"rendered":"College of Engineering and Computer Science presents Assistive Technology projects April 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Come and see the Assistive Technology projects first year engineering students have created on Tuesday, April 21, from 5-7 p.m. on the second floor of the EMCS building (on the Card Auditorium side of the building).\u00a0 Student teams will present posters and be available to discuss 11 projects.\u00a0 They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andrew\u2019s Parallel Bars<\/strong>, created for a three-year-old boy who has congenital amputation of his arms and legs. He is learning to use prosthetics and he needs an indoor set of parallel bars to practice walking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Layla\u2019s Sensory Wall<\/strong> will help a six-year-old girl to improve her development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A second project will also assist those caring for Layla. It is a large <strong>Changing Table<\/strong> with built in steps and storage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plasma Car Adaptation<\/strong> has improved an existing Plasma Car for eight-year-old Calob, who has spastic quadriplegia. Calob could not use his Plasma Car for therapy because one of his hands was not able to use the steering wheel and he had difficulty reaching the steering wheel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sarah\u2019s Locker Aid<\/strong> will assist a 12-year-old girl who has cerebral palsy as she uses her locker at school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ten-year-old Skyler has cerebral palsy and cannot walk independently, so students have worked on a rolling transport device known as <strong>Skyler\u2019s Transporter<\/strong> to move her more easily from her bedroom to the restroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Mackenzie Scooter Helper<\/strong> will assist a very independent 14-year old boy with Duchene\u2019s Muscular Dystrophy. This device will help him transition from his scooter to restroom facilities at school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>Playhouse Frame<\/strong> will provide a structure for children with disabilities at the Stellar Therapy Clinic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Stellar Therapy Clinic also needed <strong>Sensory Playhouse Activities<\/strong>. Another student group has developed a variety of safe, fun things for the students to enjoy in the playhouse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Some children in a special education class at Spring Creek Elementary School in Chattanooga have difficulty walking and use a \u201cvertical wheelchair\u201d called a stander to help develop bone density. However, it\u2019s not easy to use a computer from the stander.\u00a0 UTC students have been working on an adjustable <strong>Stander Computer Desk<\/strong> so that the students in the special education class can use the computers and monitors at the correct height.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Another project designed to assist some students in the special education class at Spring Creek Elementary School will allow <strong>Wheelchair Sensory Play Access<\/strong>.
