{"id":14227,"date":"2015-11-04T16:10:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-04T21:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=14227"},"modified":"2015-11-10T11:04:51","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T16:04:51","slug":"civil-war-press-symposium-is-november-5-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2015\/11\/civil-war-press-symposium-is-november-5-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil War Press Symposium is November 5-7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\u2019s twenty-third annual Symposium on the 19th Century Press, the Civil War, and Free Expression will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 5-7.\u00a0 The conference will begin Thursday afternoon at the Read House hotel and continue Friday and Saturday at the UTC University Center.\u00a0 All paper sessions are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will feature forty speakers from across the nation and beyond, and will include a video conference presentation by Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer, who will discuss \u201cAbraham Lincoln and the Power of the Press,\u201d the subject of his new book, at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 6, in the Raccoon Mountain Room.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the conference is to share current research and develop a series of monographs on the 19th century press, the Civil War and the press, and 19th century concepts of free expression.\u00a0 Papers from the first five conferences were published by Transaction Publishers in 2000 as a book of readings called <em>The Civil War and the Press<\/em>.\u00a0 Purdue University Press published papers from past conferences in three distinctly different books titled <em>Memory and Myth: The Civil War in Fiction and Film from<\/em> <em>Uncle Tom&#8217;s Cabin to Cold Mountain<\/em> (2007), <em>Words at War: The Civil War and American Journalism<\/em> (2008), and <em>Seeking a Voice: Images of Race and Gender in the 19th Century Press<\/em> (2009). In 2013, Transaction published <em>Sensationalism: Murder, Mayhem, Mudslinging, Scandals, and Disasters in 19th-Century Reporting,<\/em> and last year, it released <em>A Press Divided: Newspaper Coverage of the Civil War.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The conference will begin Thursday, November 5, at the Read House at 3:30 p.m. with six presentations: \u201cAt War with Madison\u201d by Joe Marren of SUNY Buffalo State, \u201cWinston S. Churchill on the American Civil War\u2019\u201d by David W. Bulla of Zayed University, \u201cThe Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island in the Popular Press: Tracing a Narrative&#8217;s Circulation\u201d by Rachel M.A. Manuszak and Sara L. Schwebel of the University of South Carolina, \u201cFire Eaters, Lightning Wires &amp; Total War: The Electric Telegraph &amp; the Evolution of Modern Journalism in the <em>Charleston Mercury<\/em>\u201d by Simon Vodrey of Carleton University, \u201cDennis A. Mahony: Prophet, Martyr, True Patriot? The Content of a Copper Head\u201d by David L. Salvaterra of Loras College, and \u201cSifting Comic Wheat from Western Chaff: Alex E. Sweet, John Armoy Knox and the Humor of the American West\u201d by Mary M. Cronin of New Mexico State University.<\/p>\n<p>The Thursday evening session will include presentations on \u201cRest Under the Shade of the Trees: Fourth Level Agenda Setting and Framing the Civil War and the Lost Cause through Obituaries of Union and Confederate Generals, 1863-1916\u201d by Thomas C. Terry of Utah State University and Donald L. Shaw of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, \u201cSumner, Brooks, and Buchanan: Paving the Way to 1860\u201d by Dianne M. Bragg of the University of Alabama, \u201cTraitors, Smugglers, Wayward Women and Individual Anguish: Newspaper Tales about the Old Capitol Prison\u201d by Angie M. Zombek of St. Petersburg College, \u201c\u2018<em>Let Every Comrade Lend Us A Hand<\/em>\u2019: George E. Lemon, the <em>National Tribune<\/em> and the Civil War Veteran Press\u201d by Crompton B. Burton of the University of Maine, and \u201cThe Presidency and the Press in 19th Century: From Lapdog to Watchdog\u201d by Jack Breslin of Iona College.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will continue on Friday, November 6, in the Raccoon Mountain Room of UTC\u2019s University Center at 9:00 a.m. with the following presentations: \u201cHenry Clay is Dead: The End of Compromise in Antebellum America\u201d by Joseph J. Cook of <em>Saber &amp; Scroll Journal of History<\/em>, \u201cJohn Brown is Not Insane: The Perception of John Brown in Newspapers After the Harpers Ferry Raid\u201d by James Scythes of West Chester University of Pennsylvania, \u201cThe Rocky Mountains, Yosemite, and Other Natural Wonders: Landscape in Travel Correspondence of the Post-Civil-War Press\u201d by Katrina J. Quinn of Slippery Rock University, \u201cChanges in the News: Characterizing Immigration, 1850-1890\u201d by Timothy L. Moran of Wayne State University, \u201cRiot, Race, and Who&#8217;s To Blame: Press Coverage of the 1885 Rock Springs Chinese Massacre\u201d by Rich Shumate of the University of Florida, \u201c\u2018What a Grand Picture\u2019: Examining Frank Vizetelly\u2019s Civil War Sketches in the <em>Illustrated London News<\/em>\u201d by Tian Kisch of Harvard University, and \u201cSensationalism or Journalism? The Civil War Diplomacy Coverage of <em>Harper\u2019s Weekly<\/em>\u201d by Niels Eichhorn of Middle Georgia State University.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, Harold Holzer will present \u201cAbraham Lincoln and the Power of the Press\u201d via video conference in the Raccoon Mountain Room. Borchard of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, \u201c\u2018My star is ever in the ascendant!\u2019 Success and the Not-so-gentle Art of Self-promotion Among Civil War Union Political Generals\u201d by Richard Junger of Western Michigan University, \u201cRossetti and \u2018The Real Soldier\u2019: Walt Whitman and American War News in Britain\u201d by Sam Graber of Valparaiso University, and \u201cNikola Tesla: An Invisible Genius; A Revealing Look Through the Eyes of the Press About a Man We Know Nothing About\u201d by Anet Frasto of Georgia State University.<\/p>\n<p>The Friday afternoon session will conclude with a panel on \u201cAdventure Journalists\u201d moderated by Lee Jolliffe of Drake University and featuring presentations by Mary M. Cronin of New Mexico State University, Katrina J. Quinn of Slippery Rock University, Stephen Banning of Bradley University, Joe Marren of SUNY Buffalo State, James E. Mueller of the University of North Texas, and Paulette D. Kilmer of the University of Toledo.<\/p>\n<p>The Friday dinner speaker will be David B.
