{"id":14582,"date":"2016-01-06T16:59:43","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T21:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=14582"},"modified":"2016-03-02T12:16:59","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T17:16:59","slug":"writing-communication-center-is-more-than-just-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2016\/01\/writing-communication-center-is-more-than-just-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Writing &amp; Communication Center More Than Just Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s this preconceived notion that the only people who go to the University\u2019s writing center are those struggling through a composition paper, but our Writing and Communication\u00a0Center (WCC)\u00a0offers so much more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/library\/profiles\/writing-and-communication-center\/ppq921.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Maggie Herb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recently took over as Director for the Writing and Communication Center. She\u2019s fighting the stereotypes, and proving how the center is a resource for more than just help with papers.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn fact, we\u2019re now called the Writing and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Communication<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Center to emphasize that fact. In addition to traditional papers, students can also seek help with things like resumes and cover letters, speeches, and presentations. As we like to say, if what you\u2019re working on involves words, we can probably help,\u201d Herb says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also explains that the center is a great place to find inspiration for an assignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cStudents can visit the WCC at any stage of their writing\/creation process. In fact, students can visit without having written a single word! Tutors can help students make sense of a confusing assignment, brainstorm topics\/ideas, and make an outline or writing plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Herb hopes that the campus at large will begin to recognize the rich resources of the WCC. The center has upgraded their offerings with extended hours and a more rigorous training program for tutors, as well as providing numerous workshops throughout the semester.
