{"id":14585,"date":"2016-01-06T17:04:17","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T22:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=14585"},"modified":"2016-03-02T12:17:34","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T17:17:34","slug":"graduate-student-selected-as-apa-representative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2016\/01\/graduate-student-selected-as-apa-representative\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Student Selected as APA Representative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Research Psychology Masters Student Tommy Coleman was recently selected as national graduate student co-representative for the American Psychological Association\u2019s (APA) division 36, the Society for Psychology of Religion and Spirituality.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a membership of more than 122,500 professionals and students, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">APA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the largest professional psychology organization in the United States. The primary focus of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apadivisions.org\/division-36\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">APA\u2019s division 36<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is understanding the significance of religion and spirituality in people\u2019s lives and the discipline of psychology by promoting psychological theory, research, and clinical practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coleman explained that his attraction to this particular division of psychology began at an early age. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was interest of mine that unfolded over many years, but I think took off as a young child when I was just primarily fascinated by science and history textbooks as opposed to more fictional and humanities based reading and stories. I always thought science presented a very interesting, amazing, wondrous, fascinating story,\u201d Coleman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his years as an undergraduate and graduate student at UTC, Coleman established an impressive <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/utc.academia.edu\/TommyColeman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">list of accomplishments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As an undergraduate, Coleman wrote two chapters for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Semantics and Psychology of Spirituality: A Cross-Cultural Analysis.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> His research on theory of mind and religion was recently published with Scientia Salon and can be read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scientiasalon.wordpress.com\/2015\/08\/13\/does-the-atheist-have-a-theory-of-mind\/comment-page-1\/#comments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Coleman worked as mentor and co-editor with UTC\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/modernpsychologicalstudies.weebly.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modern Psychological Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the only psychology journal edited and published by undergraduate students in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat I enjoyed most was the time to do independent study with Dr. Hood and reading the things that I found personally interesting, meaningful, and important for psychology; of course what I wanted to look at in terms of religion or beliefs. Perhaps a better word would be worldviews because my research concerns atheists. Non-religious people don\u2019t believe in gods, which is interesting because for the majority of all other psychological research, it\u2019s happiness or emotions. You don\u2019t typically have individuals in the world who identify as not happy, or not emotional. So, I think the psychology of religion and atheism, or non-belief, really tests some of the common assumptions or methods that are used elsewhere in science, but particularly when it comes to this unseen agent or agents, and whether you believe or don\u2019t believe,\u201d Coleman explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a graduate student co-representative with division 36, Coleman explained that his job is very open-ended, and he\u2019s still in the learning phrase. Along with co-representative Steffany Homolka of Case Western Reserve University, he will work with graduate student volunteers to create opportunities for success and career advancement for aspiring professionals in their field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI really have to thank <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/equity-diversity\/profiles\/sgm943.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christopher Silver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/psychology\/profiles\/faculty\/hood.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Hood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0for facilitating and sustaining my interest in psychology of religion.
