They planned the design to move a young girl with cerebral palsy from her bed, to the bathroom, and to the stair lift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skyler, 10-years-old, lives with her grandparents, who had been manually moving her. \u00a0As Skyler has grown, moving her has become more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe dimensions of the home are not built according to ADA standards,\u201d explained Corbin Williams, a member of the student team. \u00a0\u201cWe are working to accommodate Skyler\u2019s weight, 100 pounds, with a lift that is reliable and will work for an extended period.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lorrie Pruett, also on the team, explained the rolling device can be used to help Skyler get on and off the floor when she is playing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis device will lower to eight inches off the floor and three feet high,\u201d Pruett said. \u00a0\u201cThere is a moveable armrest and a seatbelt so that she will be secure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steven Freeman said the students struggled a bit with how to smoothly raise and lower the lift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are expecting the project to come in close to our budget of $800,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team project was presented at the 2015 Engineering Showcase.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A team of engineering students designed a rolling device to move a young girl with cerebral palsy from her bed, to the bathroom, and to the stair lift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-wrap\"><span><a class=\"more-link button text\" href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2016\/01\/14638\/\"><span>Continue Reading <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":757,"featured_media":14639,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","_ef_editorial_meta_date_first-draft-date":"","_ef_editorial_meta_paragraph_assignment":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_needs-photo":"","_ef_editorial_meta_number_word-count":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_slider":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_featurette":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[59],"tags":[12763,12815],"class_list":{"0":"post-14638","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-college-of-engineering-and-computer-science","8":"tag-college-of-engineering-and-computer-science","9":"tag-engineering-showcase","10":"entry"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
