\"LINKS<\/a>Students from Tyner High School and The Howard School recently went head to head in a debate tournament to compete for recurring scholarships to UTC. <\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament consisted of two qualifying rounds leading up to the final debate in the UC Auditorium this May, during which teams competed in front of a professional audience that included UTC students as well as current judges, attorneys, and the current superintendent. <\/span><\/p>\n

This year, Howard came out on top.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a very close competition. Tyner gave them a run for their money, and their team was mostly freshmen and sophomores, so they\u2019ll be back next year with a vengeance. And we\u2019ve been reminding them that they were so close this year, they\u2019re going to be amazing as seniors,\u201d said <\/span>Laurie Melnik<\/span><\/a>, Executive Director of the <\/span>Southeast Center for Education in the Arts<\/span><\/a> (SCEA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Winners received awards named after individuals that the students admire and respect, including Robert Fisher, UTC alumnus and Rhodes Scholar, and Judge Curtis Collier, Senior United States District Judge. Howard high school received an award named after Judge Walter F. Williams, former Chattanooga City Judge, who was there to present his award.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese scholarships are renewable, so when they get to UTC and maintain their grade point average, that scholarship is there every year. Many freshmen have lots of one time scholarships, and the second year they find themselves needing more money, so it was important to me for these scholarships to be renewable,\u201d said Dr. Joyce Hardaway, the Executive Director of The Links Academy, who was responsible for approaching Chancellor Angle to partner with UTC to make this happen..<\/span><\/p>\n

\"LINKS<\/a>Hardaway continued, \u201cWe had a conversation about raising the ante. Generally, a good debater is also a good student, capable researcher, well spoken. And those are the students you want at your university. So, let\u2019s make the University a carrot for them to really strive for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, there was also a new award named in honor of Melnik, a surprise to her at the presentation. Debate is a program that\u2019s close to Melnik\u2019s heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI became involved in debate as an undergraduate, and that\u2019s where I found my voice, and it\u2019s where things really started to stick for me in college. I\u2019m a first generational highschool and college graduate, and my family was very supportive, but they didn\u2019t really know how to support my academic career. That\u2019s how I can relate, and I see this as a way to give back,\u201d Melnik said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Melnik continued, \u201cI\u2019m very open with them, and I share my story with them, right from the beginning, because I think it\u2019s important for them to know why I\u2019m involved, and also I want them to know that they can change their lives. Education was my opportunity to make a difference in my life, and I had some really passionate and patient educators who helped and inspired me. I want to help them to see the potential in themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The year long debate program prepared students to compete in parliamentary style debate, in which students are aware of the topic ahead of the time, but must be prepared to argue either side and adapt quickly. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very strategic in finding topics that they can relate to – on a school level, on a community level, and on a wider level, so they start to feel connected and engaged and like they can make change,\u201d Melnik said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Topics have included questions like \u201cTo make a community safer, which would be more beneficial, a community watch program or increased police presence?\u201d and \u201cTo be college ready, is high stakes standardized testing important?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"LINKS<\/a>\u201cWhen you present a topic, students will often initially say, \u2018I\u2019m against that\u2019 or \u2018I\u2019m for that\u2019 but, because they have to be able to argue both sides, while they may lean one way, they have to be able to understand a point of view that differs from their own, and they have to research and be able to logically defend either point of view. So, we take the opportunity to say, okay, let\u2019s research this topic, let\u2019s be able to say more than, \u2018I hate this\u2019,\u201d Melnik said.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year for the first time, the program also did a series of e-debates via Facetime, where Howard students would watch a round of debates at Tyner, and Tyner students would watch a debate round at Howard, and gave each other feedback. This was a way to build relationships between the schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a great way for students to build confidence, and as they become more effective communicators, you just see them have a different kind of drive, and they\u2019re starting to ask different questions, like, \u2018When I go to college\u2026\u2019\u201d Melnik said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a part of the program, students also completed ACT preparation and went on four college campus tours. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to help these students start thinking in terms of their college career, instead of just freshman year and sophomore year and so on, and we want to show them that we\u2019re making this kind of investment for all four years, to help them achieve their goals. And they get excited, and start to see college as more than just completing a list of courses, as the chance to make positive changes,\u201d Melnik said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament was made possible by The Links, SCEA, The UTC Chancellor\u2019s Multicultural Advisory Council, and sponsored in part by The UTC Office of Equity and Diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe University, through Laurie, has embraced really this program. She has worked really hard, with these teachers at the school level, to help them understand the components of the debate and get the students involved and keep them motivated. UTC has just been a tremendous resource,\u201d Hardaway said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
