The listings above are among the students being presented at the event, but don\u2019t let them scare you. Discussions on the topics won\u2019t be so far above your head you\u2019ll feel as if your knuckles are dragging the ground.<\/p>\n

One of the goals of ReSEARCH Dialogues \u201cis to clearly communicate and share information across academic disciplines, so you won\u2019t have to be an expert in any particular field to enjoy the event,\u201d says Dr. Joanne Romagni, vice chancellor for research and dean of the Graduate School.<\/p>\n

Set for Tuesday and Wednesday, the annual presentation brings together faculty members and students in graduate and undergraduate programs. All have spent months on specific projects, conducting interviews, poring over data sheets, crunching numbers \u2014 taking all the necessary steps when you\u2019re trying to nail down results.<\/p>\n

\u201cResearch, scholarship, and creative expression are literally the lifeblood of a university,\u201d Romagni says. \u201cScholarly inquiry promotes excellence among faculty, enriches the learning environment for students, impacts economic development and fosters a vibrant community of scholars.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUniversities exist to create and share knowledge for the public benefit and to prepare students for lifelong learning and inquiry within a range of careers \u2014 including careers that may not exist yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here are three of the studies to be presented at ReSEARCH Dialogues, one from an undergraduate student, one from a graduate student and one from a faculty member:<\/p>\n

Dominique Malone admits \u2014 with chagrin \u2014 that the thoughts even cross her mind.<\/p>\n

Whenever she hears or reads about a woman being raped, she thinks: What did the victim do to put herself in this situation?<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I\u2019d like to say, \u2018She is not at fault at all,\u2019 the first thing that comes to my mind really \u2014 and I don\u2019t mean to be disrespectful in saying it \u2014 but it\u2019s \u2018What did you have to drink?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThat really shouldn\u2019t be your first thought.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s known as \u201cvictim blaming\u201d and it\u2019s nationwide, she says. Trying to understanding the concept and why it\u2019s so prevalent was part of what she learned during her research for \u201cDisenfranchisement of Rape Victims,\u201d the project she\u2019ll be present at ReSEARCH Dialogues.<\/p>\n

A freshman majoring in criminal justice with a minor in communications, she and her advisor, graduate student April Bennett, pored over data from across the country, digging into the events surrounding rape cases once they\u2019re reported to police.<\/p>\n

Her findings weren\u2019t pleasant.<\/p>\n

For every 1,000 rapes reported, 994 perpetrators walk free, according to data from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, an anti-sexual assault organization.<\/p>\n

Fifty-seven will be arrested; 11 will be taken to court; seven will be convicted of a felony, but only six will go to jail, RAINN reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Michigan alone they had over 2,000 rape kits that had gone untested for 10 years,\u201d Malone says.<\/p>\n

The problem is \u201csystematic,\u201d she explains, starting with the police and rising through the attorneys to the judges and even to the juries.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Lawyers) have to train the victim to act a certain way when they\u2019re on the witness stand,\u201d she says. \u201cIf not, the jury won\u2019t take them seriously or think that they\u2019re too emotional or not emotional enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
