One of just 32 chapters to be honored for excellence with the Golden Torch Award at the Mortar Board National Conference held in July, the UTC Quadrangle Chapter achieved this national recognition based on devotion to the honor society\u2019s three key ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was thrilled to present the Mortar Board chapter at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Golden Torch Award at our conference. Throughout the academic year, the chapter exhibited exceptional leadership, dedicated many hours to community service, participated in the national \u2018Reading is Leading\u2019 literacy initiative and so much more. The group truly serves as a strong example to other chapters, continually growing and improving chapter traditions year after year,\u201d said Megan Stevens, Interim Executive Director of Mortar Board.<\/p>\n

Quadrangle Chapter President Carlyn Saylors and Director of Communication Melody Dale were present to accept the chapter\u2019s award.<\/p>\n

Mortar Board recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 227 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The Quadrangle chapter at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was chartered in 1953 and currently has 50 members.<\/p>\n

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, distinguished politician Condoleezza Rice and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O\u2019Connor.
