The hospital patient is a big guy. Real big.<\/span><\/p>\n

OK, let\u2019s be blunt: He\u2019s obese.<\/span><\/p>\n

But he needs to get out of his bed so tests can be run on him in another room. A nurse is there to help him, but she\u2019s alone and there\u2019s no lift equipment to give her a hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s all up to her. And that\u2019s where the danger lies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOften they will need to move somebody or help somebody sit or stand, and they can\u2019t without hurting themselves,\u201d said Dr. Chris Cunningham<\/a>, UC Foundation Associate Professor of Industrial-Organizational and Occupational Health Psychology<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are certain things that they\u2019re taught to do right, but in the heat of the moment, say a patient falls or needs immediate help, you can\u2019t always do it that way,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Chris Smith<\/a>, director of the School of Nursing<\/a> at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, said injuries to muscles and bones are the No. 1 problem faced by nurses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNurses always are at risk for musculoskeletal issues due to improper body mechanics \u2014 injuries to neck, back, shoulder, knees in particular,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Working nurses also must deal with such hazardous issues as needle sticks, falling, even violent and uncooperative patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Preventing injuries of all kinds is the goal of a study Cunningham has started through the Department of Psychology<\/a> and in collaboration with the safetyCures group of the Chattanooga Regional Health Innovation Coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fact that nurses get injured on the job \u201cis not news,\u201d he said, \u201cbut we haven\u2019t seen a good chronicling and documentation of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Such injuries cost the healthcare industry about $20 billion a year, said Cunningham, pointing to statements and evidence from governmental agencies, public health professionals and peer-reviewed studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do with this project is gather information from both sides, from the education said and the practice side, and start to identify: Where are these gaps \u2014 if they\u2019re there,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if we do identify gaps \u2014 and we think we probably will \u2014 what can we do about it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At UTC, techniques to prevent injuries are part of the regular curriculum in the School of Nursing, Smith said. Skills outlined in 2007\u2019s Quality and Safety Education for Nurses project, which looked at areas where nurses might be at risk for hurting themselves in their daily jobs, are incorporated throughout the coursework, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the study, Cunningham has reached out to healthcare providers and educators throughout the city and the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve spoken to three or four nursing programs regionally, another five or six to connect with and then we\u2019re trying to line up healthcare partners,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re trying to line up three or four of the hospitals in town and a couple of the private clinician practices that have fairly large nursing staffs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Anecdotal evidence from working nurses also is being figured into the equation, he said. Some who have returned to UTC to pursue Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees described what has happened to them while dealing with patients, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018There\u2019s what we\u2019re taught and then there\u2019s what we\u2019re supposed to do and then there\u2019s the reality,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cJust hearing from them tells me we\u2019re on to something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But he insists the ultimate goal of the study is not to point fingers, saying \u2018You\u2019re doing it right and you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u2019 \u201cThe lines are too blurry to make such distinctions,\u201d he said<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not our intention right now \u2014 or at any time \u2014 to say the way it\u2019s being taught in schools is the right way and that practices in the communities have to change,\u201d Cunningham said. \u201cIt might be that practice is reality and education has to change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to be very open-minded about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
