University of Memphis was No. 1 on the list with $249,064; Belmont was No. 4, raising $113,230.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here\u2019s the Top 10 list:<\/li>\n<li>University of Memphis: $249,064<\/li>\n<li>Illinois State University: $184,914<\/li>\n<li>University of New Haven: $128,217<\/li>\n<li>Belmont University: $113,230<\/li>\n<li>Texas Tech: $103,537<\/li>\n<li>College of Saint Benedict and Saint John\u2019s: $84,626<\/li>\n<li>Iowa State University: $81,073<\/li>\n<li>University of St. Thomas: $74,143<\/li>\n<li>Arkansas State University: $69,777<\/li>\n<li>Bryant University: $61,329<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>On a Friday in February, about 100 people headed to the Aquatic and Recreation Center. But they didn\u2019t go during the building\u2019s usual hours.<\/p>\n<p>They were there from midnight to 6 a.m. And they had to stay awake the whole time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the night, we were all exhausted, but energized at the same time,\u201d says Alexis Hurley, a junior communications major and executive director of the organization that sponsored the event.<\/p>\n<p>Up \u2019Til Dawn raises money for Memphis\u2019 St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital, which focuses on cancer treatments. More than 60 colleges and universities across the country participated in the fundraising effort. The groups raised more than $2.3 million, says Avery Jordan, regional development representative at ALSAC, the funraising arm of St. Jude.<\/p>\n<p>The night in the ARC was the culmination of almost a year of work and fundraising by the UTC group. The group, which started up again in April 2016 after\u00a0years of inactivity, raised $42,312, one of the highest amounts of any first-year organization and not all that far off the nationwide Top 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis effort has been truly student-led. As an administration, we brought the program to our students because of strong student interest and our institution\u2019s commitment to promote the importance of civic engagement and philanthropy,\u201d says Austin Arias, assistant dean of students and one of the organization\u2019s advisors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money they have fundraised will truly ensure a family never receives a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food \u2014 because all a family should worry about is helping their child live,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Raising money at UTC was accomplished through social media, emails, text messages, phone calls and setting up tables at various events around campus.<\/p>\n<p>Staying awake during Up \u2019Til Dawn was not that hard, Hurley says, because of all the activities that took place over its six hours.
