There are more than 20 coffeehouses in the Chattanooga area, with locations downtown, on the North Shore, and in Southside and St. Elmo, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Pasinger, who came up with the idea for the documentary and directed it, says such businesses are communal watering holes \u2014 or perhaps coffee-ing holes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think some of the best stories are where people come together, and coffeehouses are a place where people gather,\u201d says Pasinger, who graduated earlier this month with a degree in communications and a minor in political science and public service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, coffee is awesome. I love it,\u201d he adds with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBitter Is Better\u201d won Best Documentary at the recent Department of Communication&#8217;s student-made documentary competition. Words like \u201ccommunity,\u201d \u201cculture\u201d and \u201cconversation\u201d crop up often in \u201cBitter Is Better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt Busby, director at the Camp House on East M.L. King Boulevard, calls the business a \u201ccollision space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you finish one meeting, you\u2019re going to run into somebody else you know, right?\u201d he says in the documentary. \u201cWe like to think about this during the day as a collision space where ideas happen so that\u2019s one way we see this space as cultivating culture in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoffee is more than just a cup, it\u2019s a space to come together and collaborate,\u201d way Matt Park, owner of + coffee in St. Elmo.<\/p>\n<p>Making a documentary is pretty much a resume when it comes to the filmmaking industry, says Communications Department Head Dr. Jack Zibluk. A Student armed with a self-produced film \u201cshows that you can do the work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFilm is a real growth area within this market,\u201d he adds, so students can take what they\u2019ve learned here and carry it to other filmmaking cities.<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta, for instance, has become a major film destination. \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d is filmed in Senoia, Ga., a small town about 35 miles south of Atlanta, while parts of \u201cCaptain America: Civil War\u201d and \u201cThe Avengers: Infinity War\u201d were filmed there.<\/p>\n<p>When making \u201cBitter Is Better,\u201d Pasinger and his partners believed there was story to be told about the city\u2019s coffee culture and, as they made the documentary, they saw the story building itself piece by piece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let the story tell itself,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can rearrange it and put the puzzle together and then you have a story,\u201d says Pasinger, who worked as assistant photo editor at the University Echo.<\/p>\n<p>Once they finish tweaking the audio and video of \u201cBitter Is Better,\u201d the trio hope to submit it to next year\u2019s Chattanooga Film Festival. As for his own career, Pasinger knows he wants to be \u201ca storyteller\u201d but says, \u201cI\u2019m not the strongest writer,\u201d so he figures he\u2019ll tell his tales visually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I can do that through video, I\u2019ll do it through video or if I can do it through photography, I\u2019ll do photography,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can drink.
