Miette Craig went through graduation ceremonies on the same day from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School and Georgia Northwestern Technical School, where she earned an associate degree in business administration.<\/p><\/div>\n

Miette Craig hasn\u2019t stopped going to school for the past two years, summers included.<\/p>\n

And the 17-year-old doesn\u2019t see any breaks for 2\u00bd more years, summers included.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to get it done,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t see the point in wasting time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDriven\u201d doesn\u2019t do her justice.<\/p>\n

On May 18, she graduated \u2014 with a 3.8 GPA \u2014from Georgia Northwestern Technical College, earning an associate\u2019s degree in business administration. On May 26, she graduated from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, having left the school at the beginning of her junior year to earn both high school and college credits through dual-enrollment courses at Georgia Technical.<\/p>\n

By the time she graduated from those two schools, she was enrolled in summer semester at UTC and is now taking Principles of Accounting on campus and an online course in Conservation of Biodiversity.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Driven\u2019 is the most accurate word to describe Miette,\u201d says her mother, Bre LaMountain, who earned her bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees from UTC. \u201cOne of Miette\u2019s most amazing traits is her ability to balance responsibilities and make the most of her time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary Beth Ondrusek, undergraduate academic advisor in the College of Business\u2019 Decosimo Success Center, says Miette\u2019s ambition was evident when she came in for an advisory meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was evident that Ms. Craig has the drive and motivation to achieve her strong personal and professional goals and we look forward to supporting her in that journey,\u201d Ondrusek says.
\nMiette says she \u201cwasn\u2019t sure what to expect\u201d when she got to UTC but says she\u2019s \u201cI\u2019ve just kept to myself and done the work.\u201d<\/p>\n

She plans to attend orientation to get to know more about the campus and meet some of fellow newcomers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much work this last month and I\u2019ve not had much time to myself,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve been stressed.\u201d
\nBut that\u2019s OK.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel a lot more comfortable. I don\u2019t regret leaving high school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moving on<\/h3>\n

Miette \u2014 the name means \u201ccrumb\u201d in French \u2014 was a 15-year-old sophomore at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe when she decided she\u2019d had enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just didn\u2019t have a good experience,\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mother says Miette\u2019s problems at school centered on the administration not students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t discuss it much because it is just so strange to think about and, at this point it is such a small part of Miette\u2019s high school experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

But along with her unhappiness, Miette didn\u2019t believe she needed to be in high school anymore from an academic standpoint.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not feel the need to stay in high school for two more years. I just didn\u2019t think it was necessary,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she first entered Georgia Northwestern, her mother learned about the Move On When Ready program, which uses state money to pay for tuition and books for qualified students.<\/p>\n

The program was \u201camazing,\u201d LaMountain says, but there still were issues to overcome. Getting back and forth to school was a hurdle for the first few months because Miette was too young for a driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe had to spend two hours on campus before her first class started, and two hours more after her last class each day,\u201d LaMountain says. \u201cI was responsible for making sure she could make it to the college, which had to happen around my work schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dealing with stress<\/h3>\n

Even beyond that, though, college was not a breeze, Miette says. The course load \u2014 she as taking from 12 to 15 hours each semester \u2014 was heavy and difficult for someone accustomed to high school. She also was waitressing part-time and working on homemade jewelry she sells on her website \u2014 https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/EarthlyIndigoDesigns.<\/p>\n

High stress was a constant and there were times she thought about quitting, but her mother always reeled her back in, Miette says.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom wouldn\u2019t let me stop for any crisis,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

LaMountain says her encouragement came from her own life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughters have experienced, by my side, the difference between a lifestyle with a degree and a lifestyle without.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey both know that stress over attempting to do something positive for future stability is a lot different from the stress of not knowing how to make a house payment after a job lay-off.\u201d
\nWhen fall semester arrives, Miette says she\u2019ll dive in with a full course load, hoping to earn a bachelor\u2019s in business administration in \u201ctwo years and one extra semester.\u201d<\/p>\n

After that, she\u2019s \u2014 yep \u2014 going for a master\u2019s in business administration. And her mother\u2019s still there to keep her going.<\/p>\n

\u201cI encourage her to continue following her plan, and I will remind her that my break from college turned into 15 difficult years before I decided to go back,\u201d LaMountain says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
