The Mid-South Sculpture Alliance Juried Student Sculpture Exhibition will open Friday, September 18, at 4 p.m., with a public reception in the UTC University Center Atrium. The public is welcome. Partners include Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA), the UTC Department of Art, and the UTC Cress Gallery of Art and the event is hosted by the UTC University Center. The exhibition will run through October 16.<\/p>\n

This competitive exhibition, juried by internationally acclaimed sculptors Robert Stackhouse and Carol Mickett, was open to MSA student members from across the Southeast and to MSA Conference Education Partner and Sponsor Institutions including the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Chattanooga State Community College, Covenant College (Lookout Mountain, TN), Spelman College (Atlanta, GA), and Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, KY).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe jurors choose an exceptional exhibition of six works from nearly 40 entries. Students whose work was selected are Claire Lewis Evans from Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Kenneth Hawkom Thomas from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Lark Allen III from Atlanta, Georgia; and local student sculptors Carlin McRae, UTC Department of Art; and Sonya Turner, Chattanooga State Community College,\u201d said Ruth Grover, Director and Curator, UTC Cress Gallery of Art.<\/p>\n

The jurors will both be present at the reception. Robert Stackhouse is best known for his large-scale architectural sculpture and large-scale paintings. His works are included in prestigious public and private collections around the world, including The Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga.<\/p>\n

Carol Mickett holds a Ph.D. in philosophy, teaching at the university level for over a decade, and working as a free-lance producer, director, and writer. Since 1999, Stackhouse and Mickett have collaborated on an extensive series of projects. In April 2009, Mickett and Stackhouse were selected by the citizens of Chattanooga for an Art in Public Places 2009 commission in the city\u2019s downtown Renaissance Park through Chattanooga\u2019s Hunter Museum of American Art and funded by a grant from the Benwood Foundation.<\/p>\n

The MSA Juried Student Exhibition is a component of the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance Annual Conference being held this year in Chattanooga, September 17 – 19.<\/p>\n
