{"id":18605,"date":"2017-09-07T10:35:18","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T14:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=18605"},"modified":"2017-10-12T12:09:39","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T16:09:39","slug":"community-caring-mocs-utc-fresh-check-day-encouraging-open-dialogues-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2017\/09\/community-caring-mocs-utc-fresh-check-day-encouraging-open-dialogues-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Community of caring Mocs: UTC Fresh Check Day, encouraging open dialogues on mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>She had just started a new job at a large company in Chattanooga when Stacey Hurst developed first episode psychosis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPsychosis is the condition that people think about when they think about paranoid schizophrenia,\u201d says Hurst. \u201cIt\u2019s where someone isn\u2019t in a shared reality anymore. I had memories that hadn\u2019t really taken place, but I remembered them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was just barely living day to day. Starting a new job. Coping with the loss of her father. She had paranoia about being hurt. She thought she was being followed. She was convinced that someone was out to harm her family. It was like having vivid dreams that are hard to distinguish from actual memories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a situation in my brain that happened that I didn\u2019t ask for. If I could have turned it off, I would have,\u201d adds Hurst. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just a break. It was a gradual sort of descent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, she says her illness was similar to her grandmother\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she does have those times where she thinks that you might have said something horrible to her and you never did, but she remembers it because there\u2019s some mechanism in her brain for writing those memories that isn\u2019t working properly,\u201d says Hurst.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>But Hurst\u2019s condition was treatable. And along her road of recovery, something clicked. Hurst started classes this semester.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She soon recognized what someone in her position needed\u2014understanding and hope. She knew her personal experiences could help her connect with others fighting their own battles.<\/p>\n<p>So she became a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/behavioral-health\/topic\/certified-peer-recovery-specialist-program\">certified peer recovery specialist<\/a> and joined the Healthy Transitions team at Volunteer Behavioral Healthcare Systems. This fall, she\u2019s continuing her education by pursuing a master\u2019s degree in social work at UTC. She hopes to become a licensed clinical social worker and a therapist.<\/p>\n<p>She is working with UTC students through BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students), an intervention program that connects her with students who might be struggling with alcohol and substance abuse.<\/p>\n<h3>Helping others<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe are a community of people who want to help each other,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/dean-students\/profiles\/alcohol-other-drug-programs\/rjb151.php\">Tricia Henderson<\/a>, assistant director for the Office of the Dean of Students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can we be a community of Mocs who care for each other? What does that look like when we do care about each other?\u201d adds Henderson. \u201cWe\u2019ve just got to figure out what that looks like and what our resources are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To cultivate a community of care on campus, plans are already shaping up, not only with BASICS but with other programs such as StepUp!<\/p>\n<div class=\"well span3 pull-right\">\n<p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 UTC offers counseling to students at no cost.<br \/>\n\u2022 The Counseling and Personal Development Center offers testing, psychiatric services, referrals, consultation and outreach. For details, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/counseling-personal-development-center\/services.php\">visit their website here.<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 An on-campus counselor is available on-call 24\/7 at (423) 425-4537.<br \/>\n\u2022 Groups including Exploring Yourself Through Art, Healing is Possible (HIP) Group Therapy and De-stress and Refocus Group meet on campus weekly. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/counseling-personal-development-center\/groupsandevents.php\">Click here for more details<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/dean-students\/profiles\/alcohol-other-drug-programs\/rjb151.php\">StepUp!<\/a> \u00a0will teach students, faculty and staff what to do if they notice signs of struggle in someone they know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know where you get that gut feeling like, something\u2019s off here; I may need to do something? Most of us are reluctant to actually intervene. StepUp! teaches a safe way to do that. It helps teach students how to be more proactive about what they are seeing,\u201d Henderson explains.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson also is working with the Student Advocacy Council to create the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/dean-students\/advocacy-initiative.php\">Advocate Initiative<\/a>,\u00a0a series of training workshops that cover topics including suicide prevention and bystander intervention as well as alcohol and drug abuse. Such workshops already existed for faculty and staff, but there was a recognition that students can also play an important role in keeping the Mocs community healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Another resource for the UTC community is the Mocs Now application available to download for IOS and Android. Included with the app is the UTC Cares Resource Guide. The guide is a go-to resource for students, family members or faculty and staff. It guides users on how to handle situations involving illness, suicidal thoughts, rape, domestic violence, sexual assault, discrimination and accommodations for disability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe think that when it comes to mental health, there\u2019s something we can change,\u2019 Hurst says. \u201cBut when it\u2019s someone with an illness like Alzheimer\u2019s, we recognize the brain as an organ and as an organ that\u2019s under attack. So, they\u2019re the same things.
