Each year,\u00a0 UTC invites scholars to Chattanooga to share current research and develop a series of monographs on the 19th century press, the Civil War and 19th century concepts of free expression.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Chattanooga\u2019s conference,” said David B. Sachsman, director of the conference and holder of the UTC West Chair of Excellence. “As long as you\u2019re interested in the Civil War. As long as you\u2019re interested in the 19th century and this era\u2014I think you will enjoy the conference.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, the symposium will feature thirty-five speakers from across the nation, including prominent scholars such as Donald Shaw, the creator of the agenda-setting theory of the press, Brian Gabrial, the author of The Press and Slavery in America, 1791\u20131859<\/em>, James E. Mueller, the author of Shooting Arrows and Slinging Mud: Custer, the Press, and the Little Bighorn<\/em>\u00a0and Gregory A. Borchard and David W. Bulla, the authors of Lincoln Mediated: The President and the Press through Nineteenth-Century Media<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur conference boasts many fine historians, and we are proud to celebrate the 25th annual symposium this year,\u201d Sachsman added.<\/p>\n

Papers from the first five conferences were published by Transaction Publishers in 2000 as a book of readings called The Civil War and the Press<\/em>. Purdue University Press published papers from past conferences in three distinctly different books titled Memory and Myth: The Civil War in Fiction and Film from<\/em> Uncle Tom’s Cabin to Cold Mountain<\/em> (2007), Words at War: The Civil War and American Journalism<\/em> (2008), and Seeking a Voice: Images of Race and Gender in the 19th Century Press<\/em> (2009). In 2013, Transaction published Sensationalism: Murder, Mayhem, Mudslinging, Scandals, and Disasters in 19th-Century Reporting<\/em> and in 2014, it published A Press Divided: Newspaper Coverage of the Civil War<\/em>. This year, Transaction (now an imprint of Taylor & Francis) published After the War: The Press in a Changing America, 1865\u20131900<\/em>.<\/p>\n
