Custodian Carla Mason sees herself as a friend and a mother figure to students. \u201cI show them a smiling face and whatever else they need. I tell them, \u2018Come to me if you just need to get it off your chest, I\u2019m here.\u2019”<\/p><\/div>\n

The student screamed. Literally screamed.<\/p>\n

Carla Mason was in doing her custodial work in Hooper Hall when she heard the howl of misery and saw the girl run into the restroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI followed her. She went on into the stall and I stood there and I waited for her,\u201d Mason recalls. \u201cShe came out and she was still screaming and I just grabbed her and held her. I said, \u2018What\u2019s wrong?\u2019 and she said, \u2018I\u2019ve had a really bad day.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI just talked to her and rubbed her back and held her and she finally did calm down. And she said, \u2018I needed that. I so needed that. Thank you so much.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Call them the \u201cunofficial ambassadors\u201d of UTC. The custodians. The groundskeepers. The maintenance workers. The cashiers and many others. They\u2019re on campus almost every day, out among the students, seeing and being seen, sometimes becoming more familiar to students than anyone else on campus, including faculty. Smiling, waving, chatting and, in cases like Mason, even hugging and comforting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all here obviously because of the students. We have no problem taking a minute, two minutes, out of our day if we can direct somebody in the right direction,\u201d says Chris Charland, who has been at UTC for 19 years and is now campus services supervisor in charge of landscaping, the motor pool and general maintenance.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we\u2019re not only there for directions,\u201d he continues. \u201cI know that, through the course of the years, there may be a student that\u2019s having a bad day. And I\u2019ve personally talked with my guys (to give students) any bit of comfort or guidance in any way, shape or form. Maybe just listen to them for a minute. We\u2019re here for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Richard Brown, executive vice chancellor of operations and finance, says campus staff \u201ccare so deeply about the campus community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey take great pride in helping to deliver the overall mission of the university,\u201d he says. \u201cThey understand that the quality of their work is also a reflection of the academic excellence\u00a0delivered to our students. They are indeed important members of our UTC family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauren Croteau, a sophomore in English, has experienced the personal attention of service workers when she was approached by a custodian from Lockmiller housing, where Croteau lives.<\/p>\n

The custodian asked, \u201cHow are things between you and your roommate?\u2019 because there had been some drama,\u201d Croteau recalls. \u201cThey\u2019re really concerned with you as people and I think that\u2019s valuable.\u201d
\nEliott Geary, a junior in English, praises UTC\u2019s service workers and the dedication they have to their daily jobs, but his respect goes beyond that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are parts of the community and as crucial a part of the community as anyone else on campus, as the professors, as the students, as anyone,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Seeing them so often, you develop a connection, he explains. Case in point, the maintenance workers who take care of Lockmiller, where he also lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s someone you need call into your home frequently, there needs to be a certain level of trust,\u201d Geary says. \u201cTo walk into our home\u2014often when no one is around\u2014requires someone who is familiar with the campus and who has a reputation on the campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carla Mason says two of her children went away to college, so she understands the fears and stress that some students feel when they\u2019re away from home, maybe for the first time in their lives.
\n\u201cYou can just see in their faces when they\u2019re lost. That\u2019s like the first thing we say, \u2018Can we help you?\u2019<\/p>\n

At heart\u2014her heart\u2014she\u2019s a friend and a mother figure.<\/p>\n
