A research project in the College of Engineering and Computer Science is \u201ca problem solver,\u201d according to Steve Douglas of TVA.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the power-generation company was in the college\u2019s Electrical Power System Analysis (ETAP) lab today, donating a $50,000 check to keep the research going, said Steve Douglas, vice president of nuclear oversight at TVA.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe university is trying to look for opportunities for applied research and we are looking for opportunities to collaborate with the university in ways that solve problems for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Without TVA\u2019s support, \u201cwe would not be able to do what we\u2019re doing here,\u201d said Dr. Ahmed Eltom, head of the Department of Electrical Engineering.<\/p>\n

The money funds a project that has discovered a method of diagnosing potential problems within transformers in nuclear power plants that doesn\u2019t involve physically removing the transformer and sending it off to be tested. Onsite testing can save millions of dollars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are very expensive ways of sending them (transformers) back to the test site,\u201d says Dr. Abdelrahman Karrar, who is heading the research project.<\/p>\n

The research project \u201cis beneficial to not only TVA but to the whole nuclear industry,\u201d says Douglas.<\/p>\n

The UTC research project has been praised at various industry conferences over the past few years. For instance, out of about 1,400 entries, a paper detailing the project was one of four \u201cBest of the Best\u201d award winners at the worldwide Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Conference in 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
