Details:<\/strong> Catalpa<\/em> publishes expository essays, creative nonfiction, photo essays, visual art and ephemera that explore the perspectives of those rooted in the American South. Limited space is available for short fiction pieces and poetry.<\/p>\n

Unexpected, unconventional, unorthodox are some of the words used to describe a new publication from the graduate program of UTC\u2019s English department. Titled Catalpa <\/em>the publication was inspired by online and print magazines like Bitter Southerner<\/em>, Oxford American<\/em> and Orion<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The staff named their magazine, Catalpa,<\/em> after the tree commonly found in the south because it \u201coffers a metaphor for the complexities of the south with its deep roots and diverse, beautiful troublesome history.\u201d On their website they explain that European settlers once thought the tree\u2019s roots were poisonous but at other times used those roots to treat snake bites or cure whooping cough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is to craft a magazine whose roots are not only in the South (which we recognize can be a fraught term in today\u2019s social and political climate) but more specifically in Chattanooga,\u201d explains Catalpa<\/em>\u2019s current editor, Drake Farmer, in an interview with Connections, UTC English\u2019s blog. \u201cSince this is our mission, so to speak, we are particularly interested in writing about, and telling the stories of, our community. I think that translates to us pursuing a fairly wide audience\u2014we feel that Chattanooga is the sum of its voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staffed by graduate students from UTC’s English department, Catalpa’s inaugural issue was published last year.<\/p><\/div>\n

The annual publication is currently seeking submissions for its Spring 2018 issue. The deadline to submit is Feb. 16.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love to see some smaller pieces that focus on a single idea, meditation, or fragment concerning the South\/Southern history,\u201d Farmer says. He\u2019s particularly interested in photo essays because they would \u201cadd a lot to the magazine\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t necessarily have to be a writer to submit a piece\u2014or idea\u2014to Catalpa<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have a great idea, but need a little bit of help getting it out into the world, reach out to us,\u201d Farmer says. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a friendly staff, and we\u2019ll do what we can to make the process a great experience for potential contributors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, the magazine\u2019s inaugural issue featured an exploration of St. Elmo\u2019s spirit through the neighborhood\u2019s annual parade for Corgis, the retelling of a 1967 UFO sighting in Nashville and the story of UnifEd, a local nonprofit organization, among other local stories, ephemera and musings.<\/p>\n
