Just want to have some fun and earn credit hours at the same time?<\/p>\n<p>Summer semester may be for you.<\/p>\n<p>While the semester is compressed into 5 \u00bd-week sessions, some courses veer off the usual path, looking at TV and pop culture, 20<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>century literature, foreign films, public policy and the sociology of aging, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>Summer registration is taking place now. To check out all summer courses, go to: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2018\/02\/register-now-summer-classes-2\">https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2018\/02\/register-now-summer-classes-2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the courses being offered this summer semester:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssb.utc.edu\/cbanpr\/zzckschd.p_disp_listcrse?term_in=201830&amp;subj_in=POLS&amp;crse_in=1030&amp;crn_in=31522\">Controversies in Public Policy<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Gun control. Terrorism. Health care. Police tactics and strategies. Opioid crisis. School shootings.<\/p>\n<p>Discuss.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of the plan in \u201cControversies and Public Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere tends to be a healthy debate among students in this course. In some ways, the debates are used as a teaching method as students can learn from each other,\u201d says Marcus Mauldin, an associate professor in political science, public administration and nonprofit management who\u2019s teaching the course. \u201cIt also exposes students to diverse thoughts and opinions in that we may view policy problems from different perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For instance, when it comes to the opioid crises, a psychologist may have an opinion on how to address it that\u2019s different than an economist\u2019s or sociologist\u2019s, he explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, students themselves may\u00a0frame problems and solutions differently based on beliefs, values, experiences,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Dissecting exactly how an issue lands on the national or local stage involves politics, the amount\u2014or lack\u2014of public support, the legislative process and the intended goal of a particular policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that students gain an appreciation of the complexities of public policy and its roles in society,\u201d Mauldin says. \u201cIn addition, I hope that students become so curious\u00a0that they question everything when it comes to policy issues they are interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/ssb.utc.edu\/cbanpr\/zzckschd.p_disp_listcrse?term_in=201830&amp;subj_in=COMM&amp;crse_in=2250&amp;crn_in=32017\"><strong>Television and Pop Culture<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Chandler Harriss won\u2019t even try to convince you that everything on TV is brilliant art. But it shouldn\u2019t be dismissed as a complete and empty timekill either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t argue that all TV programs offer something of value (see any show carrying the name \u2018Kardashian\u2019), but I will suggest that many TV programs do,\u201d says Harriss, an assistant professor of communication. \u201cIf we can learn to become discerning and knowledgeable viewers, then we can find something of value within a broad range of programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has taken that opinion and carried into \u201cTelevision and Pop Culture,\u201d an examination of the way TV influences us throughout our society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTV helps us construct identities and represents them,\u201d he says. \u201cThese identities\/representations shape who we become and who others perceive us to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The medium is so intimately integrated into our lives, it cuts a swath across business, art, politics, class, race, gender and sexuality, he explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTV is an ideologically-laden medium that both reinforces and challenges our dominant beliefs about the world we inhabit,\u201d Harriss says.<\/p>\n<p>In the class, students will examine how TV writers and videographers tell their stories, and how costuming, set design, sound and lighting all contribute to the larger picture (pun intended).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTV is a mode of storytelling,\u201d Harriss says. \u201cLike all media, TV borrows some techniques from other media forms but ultimately it speaks its own language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal is for students to understand \u201cthat efforts to dismiss an entire medium as a \u2018vast wasteland\u2019\u2014to quote former FCC Chair Newton Minow\u2014are misguided,\u201d he says. \u201cNo medium is perfect, and TV certainly is not, but that doesn\u2019t mean that TV universally fails to offer us something of value. After all, not all books are great, now are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssb.utc.edu\/cbanpr\/zzckschd.p_disp_listcrse?term_in=201830&amp;subj_in=MLNG&amp;crse_in=1500&amp;crn_in=32092\">World Cinema<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The French are known for their wine, their cheeses, their perfumes.<\/p>\n<p>Monica R. Garoiu wants people to know about its films.<\/p>\n<p>In her \u201cWorld Cinema\u201d course, she will focus on French films by such directors as Francois Truffaut, Jean Renoir and George M\u00e9li\u00e8s. Students will learn about the major stylistic movements in the country\u2019s cinema.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will analyze classical and popular films set in or about France through a variety of critical lenses in order to better understand the complexities and particularities of French cinema,\u201d she says. \u201cWe will study major movements\u2014poetic realism, New Wave, heritage films, beur cinema, among others\u2014and their influence, and will emphasize, in particular, issues of social equality and national identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the online course, the autobiographical elements and technical innovations of Truffaut\u2019s\u00a0<em>The 400 Blows<\/em> will be examined. Renoir\u2019s <em>Grand <\/em>illusion will be viewed<em> \u201c <\/em>for its poetic style and pacifist message\u201d Alain Resnais\u2019\u00a0<em>Hiroshima Mon Amour <\/em>has been chosen for the \u201cinnovative way in which it explores the relationship between memory, trauma and representation,\u201d Garoiu says.<\/p>\n<p>Will the class be watching these films in their entirety? In class or on their own?
