Rachel Garcia spent days documenting the life of Alek Ferguson, local massage therapist and new mom for a final assignment in her photojournalism class.<\/p>\n

A senior majoring in communication, Garcia was assigned the task of engaging with a social issue through storytelling. She created \u201cNew Life as a Single Mother\u201d in response, a story that gives a glimpse into the daily life of Ferguson as she cares for her newborn daughter, Aurora.<\/p>\n

Garcia\u2019s story became more than just an assignment when it was shared on Rising Rock, a recently created website that features nonfiction stories about Chattanooga by UTC communication students.<\/p>\n

Garcia visited Ferguson\u2019s home several times, spending hours each time with the new mom and her baby, talking to her and taking photos.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt Alek\u2019s story illustrates the sacrifice, financial strain and loneliness that many first-time single mothers experience, especially when they have complete responsibility of a newborn without the help of their partner,\u201d Garcia says.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir struggle is often unintentionally overlooked, and I wanted to visually show Alek\u2019s strength and resilience behind that struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project taught her that photographing someone during their intimate moments is no easy feat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hardest part for me was overcoming the feeling that my camera was invasive of Alek\u2019s personal space and moments,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

How the rock rose<\/h3>\n

Billly Weeks, professor in the Department of Communication, created Rising Rock as a bridge for his students to connect campus with community by telling the stories of Chattanooga.<\/p>\n

The name Rising Rock was chosen to pay homage to the city\u2019s name. Chattanooga is a word for Lookout Mountain in the Muskogean language. He knew that telling the city\u2019s story would be one of the best ways his students could engage with the community, so he partnered with Dr. Charlene Simmons, UC Foundation associate professor of communication, and together they came up with Rising Rock.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause, in theory, we\u2019re storytellers,\u201d says Weeks, who also is a professional photographer.<\/p>\n

The online storytelling project officially launched last fall, featuring the work of students in communication classes and stories from UTC student media, including the University Echo. The storytelling project will gain momentum this fall with an entire class devoted to the creation and distribution of its stories.<\/p>\n

The class, Weeks says, goes beyond learning the technical skills of working a camera or equipment, which has been the main focus of his other classes. Instead, its priority is reporting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want them [the students] to be able to walk out to anybody sitting on their front porch, have a conversation and be able to bring back a story, which is a challenge for all of us.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to go up and introduce yourself and say \u2018Hi.\u2019 It\u2019s another thing to go up, introduce yourself, say \u2018Hi\u2019 and to walk away with that person\u2019s story. Because we all have a story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Connecting with the community through storytelling is what Rising Rock is all about, Weeks says, and making student work visible is vital.<\/p>\n

That means more stories like Garcia\u2019s \u201cNew Life as a Single Mother\u201d and Benjamin Wilt\u2019s \u201cGet These Darn Kids Outside!\u201d have life beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n

Photographing the invisible<\/h3>\n

When Wilt was assigned his final project for Weeks\u2019 photojournalism class, the senior communication student knew exactly what he wanted to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very passionate about environmental issues and how we can do day-to-day things to minimize our impact and educate those around us,\u201d Wilt says.<\/p>\n

He reached out to his contacts at TenneSEA, a local division of CaribbeanSEA, a student environmental alliance focused on stormwater education and water monitoring. Wilt had already done some work with the group and wanted to tell their story.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn’t easy to photograph an issue that isn’t visible,\u201d he says. \u201cThis forced me to go out of my comfort zone and really get creative on how I could represent environmental education the most effective way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

He followed Julie Novak, who works for the alliance, as she met with local students to pick up trash on Signal Mountain trails and brainstormed ideas for managing stream banks behind their elementary school.<\/p>\n

Also featured on Rising Rock is communication graduate, Chris Halleen’s “The Steward.” This short documentary tells the story of cavers working to preserve the Steward Spring cave following incidents of vandalism.<\/h4>\n
