They were really relevant and contemporary and they were everything I was really interested in solving,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>A following course in social entrepreneurship cemented her new direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018Wow, this is really cool. I can make money and I can solve social issues. This is exactly what I want to do,\u2019\u201d says Butera, a Brock Scholar majoring in women\u2019s studies with a minor social entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>Her desire to make a difference is one of the reasons she came up with The Birds + the Bees, a proposed business to create tools that help with sex education from the perspectives of children learning and parents teaching. Among her ideas are electronic and board games, mobile apps, books and software to \u201ccreate age-appropriate, evidence-based sex education tools for ages preschool to 16 or 17,\u201d she says<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Healthy education\u2019 is probably a better umbrella term. It involves so much more than just sex,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Her business idea landed her as one of the finalists in this year\u2019s 36|86 Entrepreneur Festival, a competition that invites 13 teams from colleges and universities around the state to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges in Nashville. Chatty, laser-focused and deeply committed, Butera is the only representative from UTC.<\/p>\n<p>The top three teams in the competition can receive up to $20,000 for their businesses, and a team selected by the audience is given $10,000 in the People Choices Award. On Aug. 28, students will be paired with mentors in Nashville to refine their business pitch. Winners will be announced the same day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a wealth of entrepreneurial talent running through Tennessee\u2019s university system,\u201d said LaunchTN CEO Charlie Brock. \u201c36|86: Student Edition gives our most promising student founders the opportunity to connect with experienced mentors, pitch their ideas to experts and potentially gain funding that will help them build their startups in Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With many public schools systems not able\u2014or willing\u2014to teach the subject, she wants to \u201cremove sex education from the public sphere, from public schools, and bring it back to the home, to increase education between parents and students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018What is something that\u2019s interactive and engaging that might get kids to learn this information and they don\u2019t even realize that they\u2019re learning it?\u2019\u201d says Butera, who has worked for the past year as a program specialist for Chattanooga\u2019s Co.Lab.<\/p>\n<p>The world is bombarded with sexual references through popular culture, and it\u2019s confusing for kids, she says<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re seeing billboards and TV shows and music and advertisements and all these forms of popular media that are just throwing sex at them all the time, but they don\u2019t know what to do with it and they certainly don\u2019t understand it,\u201d Butera says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re kidding ourselves if we say, \u2018Hey, just don\u2019t have sex\u2019 and we\u2019re throwing all this popular media at them that says \u2018Hey, sex is really cool,\u2019 and we\u2019re not providing them education on what sex actually is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the name of her business will have to change because there is already a company called The Birds + the Bees, her ultimate goal will be the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is that, by the time I\u2019m 60 or 70, I want to be able to look back and say, \u2018I did something positive,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cThis is just the big, big, big, big, big dream, but I would love look at the rate of STDs and teen pregnancies and domestic violence and sexual assault and say, \u2018Hey, since I implemented whatever the final product will be, those rates have gone down.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not that she\u2019s so self-centered she thinks her business will be the only factor in that outcome; it would be enough to know that she has some kind of impact, even if it\u2019s small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not reinventing the wheel; there are plenty of competent sex education programs out there; it\u2019s a just a matter of turning them into something that\u2019s really engaging for students and it doesn\u2019t have to be things that are taught by an educator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenzie Butera is a finalist in the 2018 36|86 competition, in which 13 students from around the state pitch their startup business plan to judges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-wrap\"><span><a class=\"more-link button text\" href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2018\/07\/utc-student-developing-a-business-plan-to-teach-sex-education\/\"><span>Continue Reading <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1105,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","_ef_editorial_meta_date_first-draft-date":"","_ef_editorial_meta_paragraph_assignment":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_needs-photo":"","_ef_editorial_meta_number_word-count":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_slider":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_featurette":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[64],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-22623","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-news","7":"entry","8":"has-post-thumbnail"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
