The Southern Conference has announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2009 fall season. A total of 25 Mocs, representing the fall sports of cross country, football, soccer and volleyball, earned recognition for their academic success.<\/p>\n

To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one half of their team’s competitions during the recently concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.<\/p>\n

The Mocs had three of the SoCon’s 10 student athletes with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, more than any other school in the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur mission is to guide, encourage and support our student-athletes in their quest for comprehensive excellence, academically, athletically and socially. It is important to us that we celebrate our accomplishments in the classroom with as much enthusiasm as we celebrate our achievements on the various fields and arenas of play,\u201d said Rick Hart, UTC Director of Athletics.<\/p>\n

Cross country senior David Moore, volleyball sophomore Jessica Scott, and soccer sophomore Susanne Mader all had perfect GPA’s heading into the fall.<\/p>\n

A total of 10 football players made the list, trailing only Wofford and The Citadel for the most representatives from that sport on the Academic All-SoCon team.<\/p>\n

Football had the highest number of student-athletes honored, with 36 on the honor roll and 21 on the Dean’s List. Volleyball had the most 4.0 GPA’s with five last semester. The women’s cross country team earned the highest GPA with a 3.61.<\/p>\n

Two senior student athletes were recognized as recipients of the Dayle May Award for having the highest cumulative GPA during their UTC careers, David Moore from men’s track & field and cross country teams and Katie Taylor from women’s golf.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to send a message to our fans, the University and the community that our vision is to establish comprehensive excellence as the UTC standard. When we have student-athletes nearing that goal, it is important to us to let everyone know about it. It also builds pride among the entire UTC community,\u201d said Hart.<\/p>\n
