John Land IV, and his daughter Rachael are in the same Economics for Managers class in the Gary W. Rollins College of Business.<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

While Rachael Land earns her MBA at UTC and works part-time at Unum, she saves money by living at her family\u2019s home in Dalton, Georgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t, but she does,\u201d says her dad, John Land.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I\u2019m sorry, no jokes,\u201d he immediately adds, looking at her as she gives him that <\/em>kind of look.<\/p>\n

Apparently the two made a deal \u2014 no Dad jokes allowed on this particular day.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a safe bet there also will be no Dad jokes allowed when the two are in class together this semester, taking Economics for Managers. Both are aiming for an MBA; both started the program in fall 2017.<\/p>\n

For her, it\u2019s a path to a possible career in marketing research; for him, it\u2019s a chance to improve his business knowledge and use it in his medical practice as a podiatric surgeon in Dalton.<\/p>\n

With many of their courses online, they\u2019ve only been in the same classroom once so far. It went OK.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t actually walk in together,\u201d he says. \u201cI walked in and see a lot of young faces that were my daughter\u2019s age. I, by far, stood out as I sat down. We were sitting close to each other; I was fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t disown him,\u201d she says with a laugh.<\/p>\n

While there was a touch of apprehension on her part, it didn\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n

\u201cInitially I was hesitant to say, \u2018Oh, you know that guy that sits next to me in class? That\u2019s my Dad\u2019,\u201d she says. \u201cBut most people have been super-receptive to it; they\u2019re really interested, including the professors. They say, \u2018I\u2019ve never had father\/daughter duo.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that I\u2019ve gotten over that hesitation, I\u2019m more willing to say, \u2018Oh yeah, my Dad and I study together.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After graduating from Auburn University in December 2016 with a degree in marketing, she spent a few months working in her father\u2019s medical practice, thinking about her future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just trying to figure out if I wanted to go back to school to get my MBA,\u201d she says. \u201cI was still searching for jobs in the marketing field, but they were primarily sales-based and I purposely didn\u2019t take any sales classes at Auburn because that wasn\u2019t up my alley.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her final undergraduate semester, she took a marketing research course and enjoyed it, but wasn\u2019t sure that was the right path. Finally, she decided to enroll in the MBA program to \u201cfurther my education and get more experience and figure out whether marketing research is what I really wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

On John\u2019s side, his best friend\u2014a vascular surgeon\u2014had been nudging him toward an MBA for about a decade, he says. \u201cI kept saying , \u2018You\u2019re right,\u2019 and the next year would come and he would say \u2018You need to get your MBA\u2019 and I\u2019d say, \u2018You\u2019re right.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

And so on and so forth.<\/p>\n

But when Rachael graduated from college, the idea of an MBA began to truly take root.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started teasing her about, \u2018You know, Rach, wherever you decide to go, I might just apply as well.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He has never taken any business courses in his life and it\u2019s \u201ccool,\u201d she says, that now she can help him with schoolwork just like he did for her in the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was younger, I was really bad at math and science, and those are his forte, so he would always help me,\u201d Rachael recalls. \u201cNow that he\u2019s getting into business and starting to struggle, I\u2019m getting to actually teach him a little bit and I think kind of that\u2019s cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their individual schedules make it hard for them to actually sit down and study together, they say, but they do share notes and, during the one class they had together, they\u2019d call each other with questions about a particular lesson or specific material.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I picked up on something in lecture that he didn\u2019t pick up on, and vice versa, it was easy to go to him and say, \u2018Hey, do you remember him talking about this subject or this topic?\u2019\u201d Rachael says.<\/p>\n

Although John has only been in the MBA program for a year, he says he\u2019s already seen differences in the way he approaches his medical practice. He better understands the financial reports and spreadsheets he receives from his accountant and investment manager, he says, although he has zero intention of letting either one of them go.<\/p>\n

But he also believes he\u2019s becoming a better boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m learning to be a better manager and being a better listener,\u201d he says. \u201cIn the operating room I\u2019m not a very good listener. I tell people what to do and they do it. In my office, I listen to patients; I don\u2019t always listen to my employees, but I have actually started kind of sitting down one-on-one, listening to them, hearing what they have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
