“For him to be able to tell everybody, \u2018I go to UTC and I\u2019m part of the cross country team,\u2019 that\u2019s just a dream come true,” says Katie Smith, the mother of seven-year-old Levi.<\/p><\/div>\n

Mark Britt is trying to pry a response out of seven-year-old Levi Smith, but the vault is locked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u201d asks Britt, a member of the UTC cross country team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m scared,\u201d Levi says in a small voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is your big day. You shouldn\u2019t be scared,\u201d Britt replies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m kind of shy,\u201d Levi answers.<\/p>\n

Britt is right. This is a big day for Levi, who lives in Rock Spring, Ga. He is officially being \u201cdrafted\u201d as a member of UTC\u2019s track and field\/cross country team. Wearing a Power C cap and T-shirt, Levi doesn\u2019t say much through most of the \u201csigning ceremony\u201d in McKenzie Arena.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understandable; most seven-year-olds aren\u2019t used to TV cameras, the clicking of multiple digital cameras and a host of people staring at them. About all he\u2019ll say is \u201cit\u2019s great\u201d to be a UTC Moc.<\/p>\n

He was able to join the team through the work of Team Impact, a Boston-based nonprofit that connects children facing serious or chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. Levi was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was 2.\u00a0 There is no cure for the severe form of the terminal disease, but it can be treated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe child joins the athletic team and the student-athletes join the child\u2019s support team. Throughout the journey, the child gains strength, camaraderie and support while the student-athletes experience lessons of\u00a0courage, resiliency and perspective they can\u2019t learn in a classroom,\u201d says a news release from Team Impact.<\/p>\n

Katie Smith, Levi\u2019s mother, says she contacted Team Impact after learning about it \u00a0through a friend whose daughter found a team with the organization\u2019s help. Levi can\u2019t play sports, but he can still participate in the team, she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor him to be able to tell everybody, \u2018I go to UTC and I\u2019m part of the cross country team,\u2019 that\u2019s just a dream come true because a few years ago, when he was diagnosed, that was something that was taken from us,\u201d Katie Smith says.<\/p>\n

She also thanked the UTC team for making her nine-year-old daughter, Madison, part of the experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe takes a backseat a lot to him, but they made sure to incorporate her just as much as him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levi and his family have attended a couple of practices and a cross country meet, team coach Andy Meyer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to establishing this relationship with them. I have a feeling they\u2019re probably going to teach us a lot more than what we can ever give them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Members of the track and field\/cross country team attended the news conference to announce Levi as a member of the team. \u201cHe usually has a lot of energy,\u201d Britt says.<\/p>\n

Levi is the third youngster to be \u201cdrafted\u201d by a UTC team through Team Impact. The men\u2019s basketball and football teams also have members that came through the nonprofit.<\/p>\n

Katie Smith says her son has always been interested in all types of sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he was six weeks old, he\u2019d watch Braves game while sitting on his Grandpa\u2019s lap,\u201d she says. \u201cHis eyes couldn\u2019t focus, but \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
