{"id":24432,"date":"2018-12-13T09:39:30","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T14:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=24432"},"modified":"2018-12-27T14:00:24","modified_gmt":"2018-12-27T19:00:24","slug":"war-on-film-course-examines-humanitys-cruelty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2018\/12\/war-on-film-course-examines-humanitys-cruelty\/","title":{"rendered":"War on Film: Course examines humanity&#8217;s cruelty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Karen Henderson first taught \u201cWar Atrocities on Film,\u201d a course at UTC, most of the students knew about the Jewish Holocaust in World War II and had some idea of what happened during the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<p>But they were unfamiliar with the Bosnian War and the Rwandan genocide of the early 1990&#8217;s, and even the name Abu Ghraib, the prison where Iraqi prisoners were tortured by the U.S. Army and CIA in the early 2000\u2019s, didn&#8217;t ring a lot of bells.<\/p>\n<p>They knew about all of them by the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir eyes were opened; they really had no idea,\u201d says Henderson, a film lecturer at UTC. \u201cThey were all quite disturbed by what people do to other people and have done to other people, really, for no other reason than they could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s hoping a similar eye-opening experience happens in January when she starts teaching the course again. Among the films she will screen are <em>Hearts and Minds,<\/em> a documentary about the Vietnam War, <em>Sometimes in April, <\/em>a feature film set in Rwanda during the genocide, and <em>Shot Through the Heart,<\/em> a feature about the Bosnian War.<\/p>\n<div class=\"well span3 pull-right\"><strong>For more information on &#8220;War Atrocities on Film&#8221; (THP2400), go to: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ry5gPJ\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ry5gPJ<\/a>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really interested in movies about the human condition; I\u2019m really interested in movies that make us better people,\u201d Henderson says. \u201cI\u2019m interested in movies as art, and in movies that have the power to change people for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite its title, the course isn&#8217;t only filled with films. There also are books to read such as <em>Rape: Weapon of War and Genocide<\/em> \u2014 \u201cThat\u2019s continually an atrocity done in all conflicts,\u201d\u00a0 she says \u2014 and the Vietnam War-focused <em>Kill Anything That Moves.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Students also keep a journal to record their personal thoughts across the semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t grade for sentence structure or spelling or anything. It\u2019s just a place to regurgitate,\u201d Henderson says.<\/p>\n<p>She stresses that she comes at the subject of wartime atrocities through the eyes of a film lover, not a historian. To that end, when students write the class\u2019s research paper, they must discuss filmmaking elements of the movies, not just the subject matter. They examine cinematography, plot, screenplay, sound and critical response, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>But she also wants students to understand the causes of the atrocities, what actually happened and how humans can so casually kill, rape and maim others, even people they already know.
