Dr. Timothy George, founding dean of Beeson Divinity School at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, will present \u201cThe Making of the English Bible,\u201d the twenty-eighth annual C.S. Lewis Lecture. This event, free and open to the public, will be held at the UTC Benwood Auditorium in the Engineering, Math, and Computer Science Building located at Vine and Palmetto Streets on Monday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
George earned his A.B. degree from UTC in 1972, received his M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School, where he was a Dora Maclellan Brown Scholar, and received his Th.D. from Harvard University. Before founding Beeson in 1988, he taught church history and historical theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. George has written, co-written, and edited dozens of books. He also serves as executive editor of Christianity Today and is a member of the editorial board of First Things.<\/p>\n
George, Dr. Robert George, and Chuck Colson drafted the \u201cManhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience.\u201d The document declares the \u201csanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage as a union of husband and wife, and the freedom of conscience and religion [as] foundational principles of justice and the common good.\u201d Nearly a million Orthodox, Catholic, and Evangelical Christians have signed the declaration since it was announced November 20, 2009.<\/p>\n
The C.S. Lewis Lectureship was established in Chattanooga in 1983 by Charles Hummel of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship to preserve the Christian and literary legacy of Clive Staples Lewis.<\/p>\n
