The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\u00a0is responsible for $353 million in annual economic impact on the state of Tennessee, according to a new study.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the UT Knoxville Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research, campuses and institutes of\u00a0the University of Tennessee System directly contributed $3.5 billion in economic impact in fiscal year 2017. The campuses include UTC, UT Knoxville and UT\u00a0Martin, as well as the Health Science Center in Memphis, the Space Institute in Tullahoma and the statewide Institute of Agriculture and Institute for Public Service.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it\u2019s no surprise that UTC\u2019s workforce, students and campus operations are responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars of annual impact on the Tennessee economy, there is an even more significant impact\u2014on the economy, quality of life and opportunities for all citizens\u2014resulting from our substantial contributions to the development of human capital and an\u00a0educated workforce,\u201d Chancellor Steve Angle said.<\/p>\n

Commissioned by UT System administration, the\u00a0study bases\u00a0UTC\u2019s impact\u00a0on payroll and non-payroll spending, according\u00a0to\u00a0Larry Kessler, who prepared the study with Boyd Center Director William F. Fox.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe looked more generally at the production of education and how much spending is involved in that,\u201d Kessler\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

In Chattanooga,\u00a0about 2,700\u00a0UTC\u00a0employees impact the economy\u00a0by using\u00a0their salaries to pay for housing, food, entertainment and other items, he says.\u00a0Those employees also generate\u00a0economic impact\u00a0by\u00a0using benefits such as\u00a0medical\u00a0and dental coverage and retirement funds, which all generate spending.<\/p>\n

Non-payroll spending\u00a0by\u00a0UTC\u2014construction, supplies, maintenance and the companies that provide those services\u2014as well as the money students spend on items such as books, restaurants and retail businesses\u00a0are cited in the study.<\/p>\n

Through all these elements, UTC created more than 8,300 jobs in the Chattanooga area\u00a0and achieved\u00a0an\u00a0economic impact of $353.1 million\u00a0in 2017,\u00a0the year\u00a0studied.<\/p>\n
